The Asia XI vs World XI T20I series that was scheduled to be held in Dhaka to celebrate the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman has been?? postponed amid the coronavirus threat.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Ha??san on Wednesday told reporters that the board is facing problems in organizing the two matches that were to be played on March 21 and 22 and a musical concert featuring AR Rahman before that.

“We had two options in our hand,” Hasan said. “We were supposed to hold a concert on the 18th. We initially had plans to do it on a small scale. But we have decided to do it in a grand manner. That’s why we have decided to defer it for the moment, and not do it on a small scale. It will not take place on the 18th. When the situation improves, we will hold it in grand fashion.”

The Indian players who were given the nod to participate in the series were KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Shami. There were reports that India captain ??Virat Kohli would also be available for the series but there was no c?ertainty over his participation.

Asia XI squad: KL Rahul (one game), Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Mohammad Shami, ?Kuldeep Yadav, Liton Das, Tamim Iqbal, Mushfiqur Rahim, Thisara Perera, Rashid Khan, Mustafizur Rahman, Sandeep Lamichhane, Lasith Mal??inga, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Virat Kohli (to be confirmed).

World XI squad: Alex Hales, Chris Gayle, F?af du Plessis (captain), Nicholas Pooran, Ross Taylor, Jonny Bairstow, Kieron Pollard, Adil Rashid, Sheldon Cottrell, Lungi Ngidi, Andrew T??ye, Mitchell McClenaghan.

The s??pread of COVID-19 has impacted sporting events across the globe as football matches in Spanish League, La Liga, would be played behind closed doors for two weeks.

Italy’s competition Serie A has been suspended due to coronavirus outbreak in the country while next week’s Champions League fixture between Barcelona and Napoli will also be played behind closed doors.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has confirmed that five Indian players will surely be available for Asia XI during the upcoming T20I series against Faf du Plessis led-World XI. And the rest â€?Shikhar Dhawan, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammad Shami, and Rishabh Pant will all play both matches. KL Rahul will play one match. There was another thing, trying to play Virat Kohli. We’re still talking about this since we did not have confirmation, I cannot say for sure. Rahul will play surely. This confirmation has come.”

T?he Pakistan Cricket Board (??PCB) obliged to Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) request of preponing the one-off ODI match between Pakistan and Bangladesh, on Thursday.

?Pakistan was scheduled to play Bangladesh at the National Stadium in Karachi on April 3. Instead, Pakistan will now play the match on April 1, ??helping Bangladesh to prepare for the ICC Test Championship.

Bangladesh’s tour of Pakistan was scheduled haphazardly due to the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020. Back in January, the Tigers visited Pakistan and played three T20Is, which the host won by 2-0l. The third game was abandoned ?due to rain.

Bangladeshi team then too??k on Pakistan for a solitary Test match, which they lost. The Tigers went back home and are curr??ently hosting Zimbabwe for a full-fledged tour.

The last match of the Zimbabwe tour, 3rd T20I, ends on March 11. Few key Bangladeshi players will then participate in the Asia XI and World XI fixtures scheduled for March 21 and 22.

Later, the Bangladesh cricket team will fly back to Pakistan on March 29 and take on the Men in Green in the one-off ODI game on April 1. ??This gives them enough time to prepare for the second Test match at Rawalpindi, starting April 5.

“The PCB is always happy to facilitate wherever it can and will be delighted?? to host the Bangladesh men’s national team for additional days in Karachi,PCB director of International cricket, Zakir Khan, stated according to HT.

It could be Virat Kohli versus Faf du Plessis in the Asia XI-World XI two-match T20I series that has been organized by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on March 18 and 21 – subject to the India skipper confirming his availability.

The matches will be played to celebrate the 100th anniversary of their founding father Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The BCB president Nazmul Hassan announced the names of the players in Dhaka on Tuesday, naming Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Mohammed Shami, Rashid Khan and Mushfiqur Rahim among the members of the Asia XI side.

The supporters of subcontinental cricket were, however, disappointed to see th??e absence of top Pakistan players like Babar Azam, Shoaib Malik and others in the Asia XI squad. There were rumors that the poor re?lations between India and Pakistan was the reason why no Pakistani player was picked for the Asia XI vs World XI T20I series.

However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has clarified that it is not the bilateral relation with India but the ongoing Pakistan Super League (PSL) which prevented their players from playing in Bangladesh. The PSL 2020, which started on February 20, will continue till March 22 – till when the World T20Is are scheduled. The PCB hence denied the BCB’s request to send their players for the series, TOI reported.

“The T20Is between World XI and Asia XI were scheduled from March 16-20 (tentative dates), while the PSL 2020 is likely to end on March 22. Since the dates of both the series couldn’t be changed, we offered our regrets to the BCB, both verbally and in writing, which they understood and accepted,” a PCB spokesperson had said earlier.

“It is unfortunate that the facts were twisted to mislead Pakistan cricket fans and followers,” the board added.

After Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) picked the star-studded Asia XI squad, the Faf du?? Plessis-led Wo?rld XI squad was also announced on Tuesday, February 25.

The 15-man squad inclu??des four West Indies, three England and two players each from South Africa an??d New Zealand. Andrew Tye is the only Australian in the side.

As reported earlier, no Pakistan player has been included in the Asia XI squad. The BCCI Joint Secretary Jayesh George had told IANS that Pakistan players wouldn’t be invited for the T20I series against World XI.

“What we are aware of is that there will be no Pakistan players in the Asia XI. That is what the message is, so there is no question of both countries coming together or picking one over the other,” he had said.

But the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) had clarified that it wasn’t about BCB picking BCCI over PCB. Actually, it was the case of the Pakistan players being unavailable for the World T20I series as they would be busy playing in the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2020.

“The T20Is between World XI and Asia XI were scheduled from March 16-20, while the PSL 2020 is likely to end on March 22. Since dates of both the series couldn’t be changed, we offered our regrets to the BCB, both verbally and in writing, which they understood and accepted,” a PCB spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, Australia’s Tom Moody has been assigned as the coach of World XI squad.

Here’s the World XI squad to face Asia XI:

Alex Hales, Chris Gayle, Faf du Plessis (c), Nicholas Pooran, Ross Taylor, Jonny Bairstow, Kiero??n Pollard, Adil Rashid, Sheldon Cottrell, Lungi Ngidi, Andrew?? Tye, Mitchell McClenaghan.

The two-match T20I series between Asia XI and World XI, slated to be played at Sher-e-Bang??la Stadium in Dhaka, has been scheduled on March 18 and 21.

Earlier, one of the matches between Asia XI and World XI was? planned to be hosted at the newly built Motera Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, due to delays in construction, the match will not be played at the renovated stadium in ??Gujarat.

Further, the opening game clashes with the dates of the third ODI between India and South Africa. The last game of the three-match ODI series will be played at the Eden Gardens on March 18 – it is also the date of the first T20I between World XI and Asia XI.

As per media reports, Motera stadium will now have a capacity of 1.1 lakh – making it the largest ground in the world.

The BCCI earlier announced that it will r??elease five players for the all-star clash. It has to be seen who the players are once the squads are announced for both teams.

It is also reported that the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, will be present to inaugurate the newly-built stadium during his visit to I??ndia on February 24.

The last match played at the brand-old Motera Stadium was back in 2014 between India and Sri Lanka. Since then, no matches have been played on the turf as the 53000-seater was demolished for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream project of building the largest cricket stadium in the world.

Asia XI vs World XI schedule:

  • March 18- 1st T20I
  • March 21- 2nd T20I

Bangladesh will host a T20I series between Asia XI and World XI in March to celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of the father of their nation, ‘Bangabandhu’ Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The series has been granted official T20I status by the ICC and the BCCI has confirmed sending five players for the same.

Meanwhile, fans’ dream of seeing Indian and Pakistan players playing in the same XI might not come true, as there are reports that no Pakistan player has been invited to join the Asia XI team, which will be comprised of Indian, Bangladeshi, Sri Lankan and possibly Afghanistani players. The two-matches of the series will be played on March 18 and March 21, 2020, in Dhaka.

BCCI yet to confirm the names

Though the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has re??quested the crème of the Indian players in MS Dhoni, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Jasprit Bumrah, Hardik Pandya, Ravindra Jadeja and Bhuvneshwar Kumar to be sent for the historic series; the BCCI is yet to confirm on the names of the five players who will participate in the series.

The BCCI joint secretary Jayesh George has confirmed that the final call on the players’ names will be taken by Sourav Ganguly. “Our board has decided to send five players. It has been left to the BCCI president (Sourav Ganguly) to decide which five players would go to Bangladesh,” George was quoted as saying by bdcrictime.com.

BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chaudhary also talked about the two-match series and added that the board had requested all the Asian countries to?? send players based on their availability. But George mentioned that no Pakistan cricketer will be invited as per messages receive?d by the BCCI.

“What we are aware of is that there will be no Pakistan players in the Asia XI. That is what the message is, so, there is no question of both countries coming together or picking one over the other,” he was quoted as saying by The Times of India.
