13-year-old Vaibhav Suryavanshi who made his first-class debut for Bihar in the Ranji Trophy earlier this year, has etched his name into cricket history by becoming the youngest batter ever to score a century in professional cricket. His remarkable achievement came during the ongoing first Test of Australia’s Under-19 tour of India 2024, held at the iconic MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. Suryavanshi’s innings not only broke longstanding records but also left the cricketing world in awe of his immense potential at such a young age.

Global spotlight on a young star

The left-handed batter, showcased maturity beyond his years as he played a blistering knock in India Under-19’s first innings. Facing the Australian Under-19 bowling attack, Suryavanshi scored a magnificent 104 runs off just 62 balls. His innings included 14 boundaries and 4 sixes, as he batted with a strike rate of 167.74. This performance also earned him the distinction of recording the second-fastest century in all U19 Test cricket, trailing only England‘s Moeen Ali, who had set the record by scoring a centur??y in 5?6 balls in 2005.

Surpassing cricketing giants

Suryavanshi’s century not only earned him accolades but also saw him surpass cricketing icons like Pakistan’s Babar Azam and Bangladesh’s Najmul Hossain Shanto in the record books. Previously, Shanto held the title of the youngest player to score a century in professional cricket, having achieved the feat at the age of 14 against Sri Lanka in an ODI in 201??3. Before Shanto, Babar had set the record when, at the age of 15, he notched up a century against Sri Lanka in an ODI in 2009.

Suryavanshi’s new record, however, redefines what is possible for young cricketers. At just 13 years old, his century places him at the forefront of future stars in international cricket. His ability to dominate an experienced Australian bowling lineup, combined with the flair and aggression he demonstrated during his knock, has already drawn comparisons to some of the sport’s greatest talents.

This historic moment has been hailed as one of the finest performances in youth cricket, ?with cricket analysts and fans alike praising the young cricketer for his composed?? and fearless approach to the game. His record-breaking century marks the beginning of what could be a remarkable career, as India continues to nurture a new generation of cricketing prodigies.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is considered as a grand stage for youngsters to shoot up their careers. In the presence of the world’s top-most cricketers and high-profile coaches, the young guns get valuable opportunities to learn all the tips and tricks to improve their skills and take their game to the next level.

Like every season’s auction, the IPL 2022 bidding process also witnessed various franchises going after the young and uncapped cricketers. One such star was India’s Under 19 skipper Yash Dhull, who was roped in by Delhi Capitals (DC) for INR 50 Lakh in the IPL 2022 mega-auction.

Ahead of the 2022 season, which is set to begin on March 26, Yash’s father has opened up on his son being bought by the DC. Yash’s father, Vijay Dhull admitted that when a player registers for the IPL auction, he does not know which team will pick him. However, Mr Dhull also mentioned that his son’s association with Delhi Capitals’ academy for eight years gave him impressions that DC would most likely pick Yash.

“When you register for the auctions and as a player when you are going under the hammer, it is not your choice and beyond your control as to which side would pick you. But with Yash already being associated with Delhi Capitals Academy at Bal Bhavan, Dwarka for a long time now, where he had practised for the last seven-eight years, we had already expected that Delhi Capitals would most likely pick him,” said Mr Dhull in a conversation with India TV.

Notably, Yash had an impressive campaign in the Under-19 World Cup 2022, where he led Team India to their title victory before capturing everyone’s attention with his scintillating First-Class debut. In his maiden game for Delhi against Tamil Nadu in the Elite Group H of ?the ongoing Ran??ji Trophy 2022, Yash smashed centuries in both innings.

Mr Dhull reckoned that if young cricketers get to represent their state-based IPL franchise, they tend to stay more comfortable, and that’s one of the reasons why Yash was also happy after DC picked in the auctions.

“Also, I feel that if the local boys get to play and represent their state-based franchise in the IPL, it motivates them immensely. As rookies, they are in a comparatively comfortable homely fabric. Even if you see the other young boys, they are taken by their local teams only. Yash was happy about being picked by DC,” Mr Dhull added.

Day by day, young batting sensation Yash Dhull is accomplishing new heights in his professional career. After an impressive campaign in the Under-19 World Cup 2022, where he led Team India to their title victory, the right-handed batter captured everyone’s attention with his scintillating First-Class debut.

In his maiden game for Delhi against Tamil Nadu in the Elite Group H of the ongoing Ranji Trophy 2022, Dhull smashed centuries in both the innings.

The 19-year-old might also make his Indian Premier League (IPL) debut in the upcoming season as he was roped in by Delhi Capitals (DC) for INR 50 lakh in the mega-auction.

Notably, Dhull was also part of the DC cricket academy and ahead of the IPL 2022 season, the ??asp??iring batter has named one bowler he would like to face in the cash-rich league.

Dhull picked England fast bowler Jofra Archer as his choice mentioning the Bridgetown-born is really quick. He also expressed his desire to form a partnership with Australian superstar David Warner. The explosive left-handed batter was picked by DC in the two-day bidding event for INR 6.?25 crore.

“I was already expecting to get picked by Delhi Capitals as I am also a part of their academy. I am really looking forward to meeting Ricky Ponting and performing under his guidance,” said Dhull as quoted by ANI.

“Jofra Archer is one bowler I would like to face. He is really quick with his bowling. And during IPL for DC, I would love to make a partnership with David Warner,” he added.

Dhull also recalled how VVS Laxman, the coach of the U19 Indian side, motivated all the boys when COVID-19 hit Team India’s camp.

“The time when our camp was hit by COVID-19 during the World Cup, all the players along with VVS Laxman sir used to have video calls. All five of us were ready to perform as soon as we would test negative. So, it was not a major problem for us,” revealed Dhull.

The day has arrived, which the fans were waiting for. The much-awaited mega-auction of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 is all set to start today in Bengaluru. Ahead of the bidding event, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has informed that they have added 10 players of the U19 World Cup to the players’ auction list, as reported by Cricbuzz.

Notably, the auction list was announced on February 1, featuring a total of 590 cricketers who were shortlisted from the original 1214 players’ list. After adding 10 cricketers, the total number of players in the auction has now become 600.

The newly added players added are Aaron Hardie, Lance Morris, Nivethan Radhakrishnan, Agnivesh Ayachi, Hardik Tamore, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Mihir Hirwani, Monu Kumar, Rohan Rana, and Sairaj Patil. While Hardie, Morris and Radhakrishnan ar??e from Austr??alia, the rest are all from India.

This also means that Indian U19 vice-captain Shaik Rasheed, wicketkeeper Dinesh Bana, and other players such as Ravi Kumar, Nishant Sindhu, Angkrish Raghuvanshi, Manav Parakh, Garv Sangwan, Siddharth Yadav, and Aaradhya Yadav are not yet eligible to go under the hammer.

The reason behind the ineligibility of the abovementioned U19 players is the rules and regulations, which clearly states that only those U19 players who have played at least one first-class match or List A game can participate in the auction. Further, if they don’t have any domestic circuit experience, they should have turned 19 before the bidding event takes place.
