The 2022 IPL edition will kick ?off March 26 i.e. just 11 days after Team India finishes their ongoing assignment against Sri Lanka. The league stage, c??omprising of 70 matches will be played across 4 venues in Mumbai and Pune with the final set to be played on May 29 in Ahmedabad.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 55 league matches will take place in Mumbai, while 15 will be played in Pune. Each team will play four matches at the Wankhede Sta??dium and the DY Patil Stadium while three at the Brabourne Stadium and the MCA Stadium.

“The IPL will kick off on March 26, the full schedule will come soon. We will also have crowds but as per the policy of the Maharashtra government. Whether it will be 25 or 50 per cent of the stadium capacity will be decided by the government instruction,” the IPL chairman Brijesh Patel told Cricbuzz.

According to several reports, the playoffs stage of the elite T20 tournament will be played at Ahmedabad’s Narendra Modi Stadium, but Patel stated that the IPL Governing Council will decide about the play-offs later.

Avesh Khan, the 25-year-old fast bowler from Indore, became the most expensive uncapped buy in the history of the IPL. The newly added Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) saw off stiff competition from the five times IPL champion Mumbai Indians (MI) to bag the speedster for INR 10 crore.

The fee paid for Avesh has surpassed the previous all-time high of INR 9.25 crore given to an uncapped player when Krishnappa Gowtham was picked by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in 2021. The base price of Avesh for IPL 2022 auction was INR 20 lakh.

The right-arm pacer was released by Delhi Capitals (DC) after IPL 2021. He finished second in the Purpl??e Cap race last season with 24 wic??kets in 16 matches.

In a scary incident, IPL auctioneer Hugh Edmeades collapsed midway during the IPL 2022 auction taking place in Bengalur??u.

The incident happened when the 63-year-old auctioneer was going through a long bidding war between Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Punjab Kings (PBKS) over Sri Lankan all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga. The bidding process was immediately halted as the camera caught Edm??eades lying flat on the floor of the auction room.

The Tata group has replaced Vivo as the title sponsor of the Indian Premier League (IPL) for upcoming season and the next – the last two years of its contract with the Chinese mobile manufacturer.

As per several reports, Vivo had agreed to pay INR 440 crore annually for the sponsorship when they bagged the rights in 2017 for INR 2,199 crore for five seasons beginning 2018. While the original deal was to end by 2022, it was exte??nded till 2023 as Dream11 replaced Vivo in 2020. So now, when Tata has replaced Vivo, they will pay the remaining amount. However, the six percent additional share will be paid by Vivo to BCCI since they did not complete their five-year term as title sponsors.

In his statement, Jay Shah, the honorary secretary of BCCI, said: “We are truly happy that India’s largest and most trusted business groups have believed in the IPL growth story and together with the Tata group, we will look to take Indian cricket and the IPL forward to greater heights.”

Tata Sons too confirm??ed the development but did not disclose further details.

“The move is expected to be a good platform to showcase Tata group’s multiple consumer brands, including the proposed launch of its app, Tata Neu,” a Tata group official told ET.

In the meantime, model-turned-actor Arjun Rampal has shared his happiness over Tata replacing Vivo as IPL title sponsor. Taking to Twitter, Rampal wrote: “And that’s a Six!!! What a way to replace logo of Sponsor of IPL.”

From the 2022 IPL season, two new franchises – Ahmedabad and Lucknow – have been added by BCCI, leading to more fun and entertainment in T20 cricket.

On Tuesday, the Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Brijesh Patel confirmed that TATA would replace VIVO ??as the title sponsor for the upcoming season ?of the multi-team tournament.

“This is indeed a momentous occasion for the BCCI IPL as the Tata Group is the epitome of global Indian enterprise with an over 100 year old legacy and operations in more than 100 countries across six continents. The BCCI like the TATA Group is keen to promote the spirit of cricket across international borders and the growing popularity of the IPL as a global sporting franchise, bears testimony to the BCCI’s efforts. We are truly happy that India’s largest and most trusted business groups has believed in the IPL growth story and together with the Tata Group, we will look to take Indian cricket and the IPL forward to greater heights,” the IPL chairman was quoted as saying to PTI.

VIVO had a signed deal of Rs 2200 crore for title sponsorship rights from 2018-2022, but after the 2020 Galwan Valley mi??lit??ary face-off between the Indian and Chinese Army soldiers, the brand took a break for a year, with Dream11 replacing it in the IPL. However, VIVO was back as an IPL title sponsor in 2021.

There are also reports that the BCCI will not los??e any money as it is still assured of an annual sponsorship sum of Rs 440 crore, which will now be paid by the TATA Group.

Due to rising cases of COVID-19 and a new strain of omicron, the threat looms large over the forthcoming season’s plausible match dates and venues.

Meanwhile, the two new franchises, Ahmedabad and Lucknow, has b?een given January 31 as the last date to sign their players ahead of the mega auction. A formal letter regarding the same was also dispatched to both the franchises last week.
