Indian wicketkeeper-batter Wriddhiman Saha has been in the headlines for the past few days. He dropped bombshells of his chat with a journalist who threatened him for not giving the interview. Many former cricketers came in support of Saha, and BCCI also asked the cricketer to reveal the journalist’s identity. However, Saha refused to proceed, explaining that his purpose was to expose the act on social media and not harm anyone’s career.

Moreover, Saha was not included in the Indian Test squad for the upcoming two-match series against Sri Lanka. After which, the Bengal cricketer had expressed his shock, stating that BCCI?? chief Sourav Ganguly had assured him to remain a part of the Indian unit following his 61-run knock against New Zealand in Kanpur late last year. Not only this, but Saha also revealed that current head coach Rahul Dravid had indirectly asked him to consider retirement during a pri??vat??e conversation after the South Africa series.

After all the developments surrounding Saha, legendary Indian gloveman Syed Kirmani has shared his thoughts and claimed that he has also been a victim of injustice in the past, but nobody bothered. Kirmani explained that every cricketer has to go through ups and downs?, and Saha has got lots of competition around him, with many youngsters knocking on the door to replace him.

“Saha has got tremendous competition around him with all the youngsters performing well in the IPL and other limited-overs matches. He’s obviously very sad, but every cricketer has to go through the ups and downs, right? We don’t know what the selection committee and the team management think about the player. I have also been a victim of injustice, but nobody talks about it,” said Kirmani as quoted by Sportskeeda.

Kirmani revealed that he was dropped from the Ind?ian side at the peak of his career despite having no competition around him. The veteran wicketkeeper also mentioned how few inaccurate reports were published about him in the newspaper stating that he was not performing well.

“I don’t know. I was at the pinnacle of my career around that time. Yet, I was dropped from both the Test and ODI teams for no fault of mine. There was no competition around me. I played 88 Tests and was the saviour of India’s ODI team on many occasions. Wrong reports were published in the newspapers suggesting that I was performing poorly,” added Kirmani.

During the early 2000s, Indian cricket was in dire need of an explosive wicketkeeper-batsman in the heavy-duty lineup —someone who could be modelled along the lines of Ada??m Gilchrist of Australia. Eventually, in the 2004 Bangladesh tour, India found a star in MS Dhoni.

The story of his national selection is detailed cinematically in his biopic ‘MS Dhoni: The Untold Story’. In the movie, Dhoni is seen hitting sixes towards the selectors, which forced the latter to give him the nod for the national team.

Now, the then Chairman? of Selectors, Syed Kirmani, has opened up on a never-heard-before tale regarding his selection in?? the Indian team,

“I have never disclosed this before, but here is how Dhoni was picked. I and Pranab Roy – my co-selector from the East Zone – were watching a Ranji Trophy match. I’m not sure which match it was since it was a long time ago, but Pranab Roy is proof. He said to me ‘there is this keeper batsman from Jharkhand, who is a very promising youngster and deserves selection’,” Kirmani told Hindustan Times.

“I asked him ‘is he keeping wickets in this match?’ Pranab said ‘no, but he is fielding at fine leg.’ That is when I got Dhoni’s stats from the last two years to look into. And Wow! There was terrific consistency in his batting ability. Without even seeing him keep wickets, I suggested that Dhoni be selected for East Zone straightaway. And the rest is history,” added Kirmani.

After a disastrous ODI series against Bangl?adesh, Dhoni found his f??eet at the international level, in the subsequent series against Pakistan.

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly during his interview with Gaurav Kapur in ‘Breakfast with Champions’, described his role in making Dhoni as a quality international player.

Ganguly surprised one and all??, including Dhoni, by promoting him up the order in the ODI at Vizag. Subsequently, batting at number three, Dhoni slammed his maiden ODI ?ton against Pakistan, scoring 148.

Team India’s wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant is a fearless bloke who believes in playing his natural game. Known for hitting rash shots that get him out at crucial times, many believe he is not the right replacement for MS Dhoni in all three formats. The latest to express his view in this regard was one of India’s top-class wicket-keepers Syed Kirmani, who was also a part of the 1983 World Cup-winning team.

“It’s unfair that Pant will be playing in all formats. When somebody is not in form, you should try out the man who has already played and performed for the country. And that person is Wriddhiman Saha. He should be given a fair chance in Test matches,” Kirmani was quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

“Pant is certainly gifted, but he should be groomed nicely and properly in the domestic structure. Once he has shown his consistency and the patience required in batting, only then he should be given a chance,” he added.

The national selectors have made it clear that youngsters will be backed and given opportunities. Saha is already 34, and it’s just a matter of time before Dhoni bids adieu to international cricket.

On the other hand, Pant is only 21, and despite his hasty and irresponsible shot selection, he has prov?ed his mettle as a game-changer at various national and international tournaments.

In the Under-19 World Cup 2016 and in last year’s IPL, he showed what he is capable of with his prolific run-scoring ability.

His Test debut against En?gland in 2018 was forgettable. But in his third Test matc??h, he struck a magnificent century and confirmed his place in the side for the tour of Australia.

After playing the first 3 Test matches in Australia, his highest score was 39, but he silenced his critics by notching up a mammoth century (159*) in the 4th Tes??t.

Apart from the selectors, skipper Virat Kohli has also shown fa??ith in him.

Earlier, former India captain Sourav Ganguly had said that “Pant is the player to watch out for” in the next one or two years.

All one can say is that the young left-hand??er will only get better with time.
