In the 25th match of the ongoing Super Smash League between Canterbury and Wellington, Canterbury’s bowler Will Williams picked up the hat-trick and ended up taking a five-wicket haul.

During the 18th over of Wellington’s innings, Williams took consecutive wickets on the last three balls of his over to dismantle the Wellington’s batting line-up.

Fraser Colson, who was looking set at 37, became the first victim of Williams. Colson stepped outside the crease to guide the ball towards square but misread the length as the ball went straight into the blockhole and demolished the stumps. Then came Lauchie Johns, who launched the slower ball of Williams on the long-on region, but failed to time the shot perfectly as it went into the hands of Chad Bowes.

On the last delivery of the 18th over, Jamie Gibson ended up giving a caught and bowled chance, which was grabbed successfully by Williams to register the hat-trick. The right-arm medium pacer didn’t just stop there as he bowled the last over as well and took two more wickets to complete a five-wicket haul.

Earlier, Canterbury scored 148-8 in the 20 overs. In response, Wellington could only reach 145, and lost the match by 3-runs.

When it comes to the points table, then Wellington is at the top position with 24 points, whereas Canterbury is holding the fifth spot with 14 points.

Recently, Canterbury came in the limelight when their middle-order batsman Leo Carter smashed six sixes in an over against Anton Devcich of Northern Districts.

During the 22nd match of the ongoing Super Smash in Christchurch, Canterbury Knights batsman Leo Carter hit six sixes in an over to enter the elite list of batsmen to have achieved the milestone.

Carter pulled off the record feat in the 16th over of the match, with left-arm orthodox bowler Anton Devcich on the receiving end of the punishment.

Chasing 220 to win against Northern Districts, the Knights were still some distance away from a win despite putting themselves in a good position till that point.

They required 64 runs from the last five overs, an asking rate of nearly 13 runs an over. However, Carter ensured they reach the target with seven balls to spare.

Carter remained unbeaten at 70 off 29 balls, striking at a fearsome rate of 241.37.

Carter has now joined Garry Sobers, Ravi Shastri, Herschelle Gibbs, Yuvraj Singh, Ross Whitley and Hazratullah Zazai as players who have hit six sixes in an over.

Of these batsmen, only two – Gibbs and Yuvraj – managed to pull off the feat in international cricket. Shastri and Sobers did so in first-class cricket, whereas Whitley and Zazai, much like Carter, achieved this in T20 cricket.
