The official Twitter handle of England cricket revealed the reason behind it. According to England cricket, the hosts are wearing black armbands to honour former captain and a leg??end of the game Ted Dexter.

“Our players are wearing black armbands today to honour the passing of our former captain Ted Dexter. #ENGvIND,” tweeted England cricket.

Dexter passed away at the age of 86 in Wolverhampton due to illness confirmed by Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC).

“MCC IS DEEPLY SADDENED TO ANNOUNCE THE DEATH OF THE CLUB’S MUCH LOVED FORMER PRESIDENT, EDWARD DEXTER CBE. After a recent illness, he passed away peacefully in the Compton Hospice in Wolverhampton at midday yesterday, surrounded by his family. Ted was a cherished husband, father and grandfather and one of England’s greatest ever cricketers,” said MCC in a statement.

Dexter, who was an attacking middle-order batter and a quality medium-pace bowler, played 62 Test matches for England between 1958 and 1968. He scored 4502 runs at an average of 47.89, with ?9 centuries and 27 fifties. Dexter also picked up 66 wickets at 34.93, with career-best figures of 4/10.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan paid his tributes to Dexter on Twitter and wrote: “Such sad news .. Ted dexter was someone who always went out of his way to offer so much great advice to me & many others .. seeing him arrive for lunch on his motorbike & then sit & listen to him discuss all cricketing issues was always a joy .. #RIPTed.”

Alex Hartley, the left-arm spinner who played 32 games for England Women between 2016 and 2019, has revealed that she received death threats in the wake of her tweet during England’s two-day Test defeat against India last week.

Hartley took to Twitter to promote England Women’s ODI clash with New Zealand after the England men’s side, having been dismissed for 112 and 81, had suffered a 10-wicket defeat in Ahmedabad.

“Nice of the England boys to get this Test match finished just before England Women play tonight,” Hartley wrote with four clapping emojis.

Test opener Rory Burns, in reply, wrote: “Very disappointing attitude considering all the ‘boys’ do to support the women’s game.”

Left-handed batsman Ben Duckett, who played his last Test for England in 2016, joined in by calling it an “average tweet”.

Hartley insisted that her tweet was taken in a wrong way. In the recent episode of ‘No Balls’ podcast, the 2017 World Cup winner said she had to face social media abuse after the Twitter miscommunication.

“I’m a bit surprised at what has happened and a bit let down in a way from certain things that have happened,” Hartley said.

“I actually tweeted it when Joe Root got his five-for, and the game was clearly going to finish that day, but it could have gone either way. Yes, if you’re an England player and you see that tweet, it looks like I’ve done it because they’ve lost and I hadn’t.

“We called it a clumsy tweet, didn’t we? The intention of the tweet was genuinely to have a bit of a giggle and say, ‘By the way, the girls play, and it might be a bit better.

“In my opinion, I’ve done nothing wrong. I’ve done a tweet that was meant to be funny, and it’s been taken as not funny, and people are giving me grief like I still play for England – and I don’t.

“It’s been really weird because the tweet went down really, really well until Rory quoted it and then it went down like a sack of s***. I just felt like I was getting attacked from all angles over something that genuinely was meant to be a bit of humour.

“The messages of slating women’s cricket and saying that the men fund women’s cricket blah blah blah. I can deal with that.

“But it’s when people are telling you to go and die in a hole. Like, really? Just for tweeting one thing.

“The one that really infuriated me was I got a tweet from some guy saying, ‘Women’s cricket’s c***, women shouldn’t play sport, women this, women that’. He was a primary school head teacher. You just think, ‘If only I could show everybody who you really are’.”

Rory could have messaged me instead of belittling me: Hartley

Hartley also spoke about Burns’ tweet responding to her, which kicked up the storm. She explained how just a personal message from Rory could have sorted out the confusion.

“I think Rory’s just not understood what could come of him belittling me. All it would have taken was a private message saying I think this is bang out of order, to which I’d have messaged back saying: ‘I’m so sorry, it was just a joke,” added Hartley.

It all happened after the English team lost the third Test against India by 1??0-wickets at the newly-renovated Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad. The Joe Root-led side witnessed a batting collapse in both innin?gs.

The vi??sitors were bundled out f?or 112 and 81 in the two innings, respectively and India chased down the target of 49 runs without losing any wicket in their second essay.

After the match, Hartley tried to take a dig at England men’s team with a tweet. She wrote, “Nice of England boys to get this test match finished just before England women play tonight.”

But Hartley’s post did not go down well with Burns, as he responded to the leg-spinner with a tweet, which was deleted later.

“Very disappointing attitude considering all the ‘boys’ do to support the Women’s game,” wrote Burns.

Interestingly, Burns’ tweet was liked by teammates Ben Stokes and James Anderson. Not only Burns, another England men’s cricketer Ben Duckett, who played four Tests for the three lions, termed Hartley’s comments as “average”.

After the drama, Hartley clarified her stance while replying to Burns’ tweet, saying her post was taken out of context.

“Think it’s been taken the wrong way/out of context. No offence was meant. We are all test match fans,” tweeted Hartley.

Nonetheless, Burns was chastised by ECB over his behaviour with Hartley on social media. According to a report in The Guardian, Ashley Giles and Clare Connor, England men’s and women’s cricket teams respective directors, spoke with the two players.

“We recognise the influence high profile people have on social media and have reminded Rory of his responsibilities,” said an ECB spokesperson as quoted by The Guardian.

England survived an early scare to pile up a mammoth total of 332/4 at the end of the Day 1 of the third Test match against Pakistan at Southampton. Zak Crawley stole the show as he scored his maiden Test century on a sun-k?issed Friday afternoon.

Crawley finished the day with an unbeaten 171 and ?stitched a terrific double-century stand with Jos Buttler for the fifth wicket. Buttler walked into the day with an unbeaten 87 to his name.

For Pakistan, the fast bowling duo of Shaheen Afridi and Mohammad Abbas didn’t quite live up to the expectations. The pair combined for a mere one wicket after bowling close to 40 overs in the entirety of the day.

Englandโ€™s opener Rory Burns’ torrid run continued as he once again met his nemesis, Afridi, early in the match. Afridi’s dexterity with the new ball forced an outside edge off Burns’ willow. Shan Masood made no mistake at the slip cordon and drew the first blood at Southampton.
