The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction is set to create waves in the cricketing world as it takes place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24 and 25. With franchises keen to bolster their squads, the event promises intense bidding wars?, especially for high-demand players.

Wicketkeeper-batters, known for their dual utility, are likely to be the centerpiece of the action, following the trend of hefty price tags in recent years. The retention of stars like Heinrich Klaasen (INR 23 crore), Nicholas Pooran (INR 21 crore), and Sanju Samson (INR 18 cror??e) underscores the value franchises place on versatile keepers.

Robin Uthappa predicts top wicketkeepers at the auction

Former India batter Robin Uthappa, during a discussion on Star Sports, weighed in on the auction buzz, naming which wicketkeepers are going to create a bidding war amongst the franchises. Uthappa identified Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Jos Buttler, Quinton de Kock, and Phil Salt as the t????op-five wicketkeepers likely to fetch record-breaking bids.

Uthappa specifi??cally highlighted Pant as?? the frontrunner to become the highest-paid player, estimating his price to land between INR 25-28 crore.

“How much? I would say between 25 and 28 crores. I think he (Pant) will get the big bucks. He will be the highest-paid player, in my opinion, in this auction, and I think he should be. I am excited for him and I really want him to be the highest-paid player. I think he will augur the kind of price from a couple of teams for sure,” Uthappa said on Star Sports.

Uthappa also c?ommented on Rahul, suggesting franchises like RCB, Delhi Capitals, and Gujarat Titans could express ?interest in the former Lucknow Super Giants skipper.

“I think RCB could be a massive contender for KL Rahul. Punjab, I don’t think he will probably go back there. Perhaps someone like Delhi could be interested. Even GT could be interested. I am not quite sure about CSK because you have already got a captain. He has been a leader before, so he will perhaps look forward to a role like that,” added Uthappa.

Wicketkeepers expected to be hot property

Wicketkeeper-batters have always been a valuable asset in the IPL, but the 2025 auction could see this trend soar to unprecedented heights. Uthappa’s predictions reflect this sentiment, as he emphasized the potential of big-money bids for players who combine clean glove work with explosive batting abilities.

Aakash Chopra, another prominent cricket analyst, recently predicted that Kishan could fetch between INR 16-18 crore in the auction, though Uthappa ?expressed surprise at such an estimate, and reckoned If Kishan does go for that much, the franchises are go??ing on potential, not performance.

“I will be very surprised if Ishan goes for 16 to 18 crores. If he does go for that much, they are going on potential. You wouldn’t say they are going on performance and someone will have to really work with him. I really think if Ishan can get his batting together, he deserves that much,” Uthappa added further.

With the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction just around the corner, the excitement among franchises is building up, especially with a strong pool of high-profile players set to go under the hammer. The IPL’s ever-growing allure means that teams are willing to spend big to secure top talent, and this year, the spotlight is on wicketkeeper-batters.

IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Wicketkeeper-batters set to spark bidding wars

Due to the IPL’s restriction on retaining a maximum of six players per franchise, many teams have had to make tough decisions, resulting in several key players, particularly wicketkeeper-batters, being released into the auction pool. Only a handful of franchises have opted to retain their wicketkeepers, meaning the auction will witness fierce competition for some of the best gloveman in the world.

These players offer a rare combination of top-order batting power and reliable keep?ing skills, making them highly valuable in T20 cricket. With an increase in franchises?appetite for balanced squads and multi-skilled players, the bidding war for these wicketke?epers is expected to be intense, with teams aiming to strengthen both their top order and fielding units for the 2025 season.

On Day 2 of the first Test match between South Africa and Bangladesh at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Kyle Verreynne has etched his name in the record books. The young wicket-keeper batter has become the second South African to score a Test century against Bangladesh, following in the footsteps of the legendary Mark Boucher.

Record-breaking performance against Bangladesh

Verreynne achieved this remarkable feat on Day 2 of the Test, reaching the three-figure mark with a composed knock of 100 runs off 132 balls. His innings was crucial in stabilizing South Africa after they found themselves in a precarious position at 99/5, still trailing by seven runs. Teaming up with Wiaan Mulder, Verreynne forged a signifi??cant partnership worth 119 runs for the eighth wicket, hel?ping the Proteas recover and eventually post a substantial total.

Notably, this innings also saw Verreynne surpass Boucher’s long-standing record for the highest individual score by a South African wicket-keeper in Tests on Bangladesh soil. Boucher’s previous record stood at just 71 runs, set back in 2003. Verreynne has also become the third South African wicketkeeper after AB de Villiers and Quinton de Kock to scored a Test hundred in Indian subcontinent.

Kyle Verreynne: A rising star for South Africa

Before this match, Verreynne had featured in 18 Test matches, accumulating 719 runs at an average of 27.65. This century marks his second in Test cricket, alongside three half-centuries. Verreynne’s consistent performance and ability to play under pressure have made him a vital asset for South Africa, especially as they navigate crucial fixtures in the World Test Championship (WTC).

Following his impressive knock, Verreynne celebrated in style, mimicking the bow of Indian cricketer Shubman Gill, signaling his excitement and acknowledgment of the achievement. This moment adds another feather to his cap as ??he continues to develop his reputation in international cricket.

In response, South Africa faced early setbacks, leaving them vulnerable until Verreynne’s partnership with Mulder provided much-needed stability. South Africa eventually bundled out for 308 boasting a healthy lead of 202 runs. In a thrilling contest between Barbados Royals and Saint Lucia Kings during the 24th match of Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 at Guyana’s Providence Stadium, Quinton de Kock produced a moment of brilliance behind the stumps, reminiscent of the legendary MS Dhoni. The South African wicketkeeper’s lightning-fast stumping sent Roston Chase back to the pavilion.

Quinton de Kock’s quick reflexes to see-off Roston Chase

The incident took place in the 14th over of Saint Lucia Kings’ innings when mystery spinner Maheesh Theekshana was bowling. On the second ball of the over, Theekshana delivered a dart down the leg side to Chase, who attempted a glance but failed to connect. Chase, momentarily losing his balance, stepped out of his crease. That was all the invitation de Kock needed.

With the precision and speed often associated with the great Dhoni, de Kock whipped off the bails in a flash, catching Chase off guard. Despite his desperate effort to regain his ground, Chase found himself tangled up and even fell to the floor, unable to make it back in time. The third umpire confirmed the dismissal after reviewing the footage, showing Chase clearly short of the crease. He was dismissed for 12 off ??10 balls, which included one boundary.

Despite the brilliance behind the stumps, Saint Lucia Kings were able to put u??p a challenging to??tal of 162/3 in their 20 overs. Johnson Charles top-scored with a blistering 53, while Tim Seifert provided a late flourish with an unbeaten 45.

In response, Barbados Royals struggled to keep up with the required run rate, ultimately falling short at 149/8 in their 20 overs. Kadeem Alleyne fought valiantly with a 47-run knock, but the Kings’ bowling attack, led by Alzarri Joseph (2-30), Noor Ahmad (2-20), and David Wiese (2-17), proved too difficult to handle.

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) have made a notable impact in the Indian Premier League (IPL) since their debut. As the team gears up for the 2025 season, some significant changes are expected ahead of the mega auction, with the announcement of Zaheer Khan as their new bowling coach.

A quick glance at LSG’s IPL journey

Debut and initial success

LSG entered the IPL in 2022, quickly establishing themselves as a competitive force. Backed by a strong squad and substantial investment, they reached the playoffs in their debut season, narrowly missing out on a spot in the final. Their impressive start set high expectations for th??e seasons ahead.

Performance in the 2023 season

Building on their debut, LSG delivered another strong performance in IPL 2023, once again reaching the playoffs. Combining experienced players with emerging talent, the team maintained a competitive edge, known for their aggressive batting and disciplined bowling under the leadership of KL Rahul.

Challenges in the 2024 season

However, 2024 proved to be a difficult year for LSG. Despite their past successes, they finished seventh on? the points table, marking a significant dip in performance. This disappointing season raised concerns within the franchise and called for potential changes ahead of IP?L 2025 auction.

3 key players which LSG might release ahead of the IPL 2025 auction

Quinton de Kock

After a stellar 2022 season with 508 runs in 15 matches, Quinton de Kock struggled in IPL 2023 and IPL 2024. Despite his T20 World Cup success, LSG may consider releasing him due to t??he slow pitch conditions in Lucknow, which d??o not suit his batting style.

KL Rahul

Questions loom over Rahul’s future with LSG, despite an improved relationship with franchise owner Sandeep Goenka. It wouldn’t be surprising if the franchise parts ways with him, especially with past dissatisfaction over his leadership.

Naveen-ul-Haq

Naveen-ul-Haq has been effective for LSG, taking 25 wickets in 18 matches, but retaining him might be difficult due to BCCI’s likely limit on overseas players. With Nicholas Pooran and Marcus Stoinis expected to be prioritized, Naveen could be on the release list, despite making an impact with the whit?e leather.

During the 15th match of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024, Waqar Salamkheil produced a magical delivery to dismiss Quinton de Kock, setting the stage for a nail-biting finish between Barbados Royals and Trinbago Knight Riders at Kensington Oval. The moment came in the sixth over of the first innings, as Salamkheil’s mastery of spin left the dangerous de Kock clueless, further cementing the Afghan spinner’s impact on this year’s tournament.

A googly to remember

Salamkheil was brought into the attack in the sixth over, and he delivered what could arguably be the ball of the match. Bowling to the in-form de Kock, who was already racing at 39 from 21 balls, Salamkheil unleashed a perfectly disguised googly that pitched just outside the off-stump. De Kock, seemingly unaware of the threat, leaned forward to defend but was completely bamboozled by the sharp turn back in?to him. The ball snaked through the gap between bat and pad, crashing into th?e stumps. De Kock, left stunned by the unexpected turn, had to walk back to the pavilion, bowled by Salamkheil for a brisk 39, an innings that included three boundaries and two sixes.

Trinbago Knight Riders’ nail-biting chase

Earlier in the match, Barbados Royals put up a fighting total of 156/7 in their allotted 20 overs after being sent in to bat. Skipper Rovman Powell was the star with the bat for the Royals, scoring a valuable 59 off 38 balls, which included two fours and five towering sixes. However, apart from Powell’s knock, the Royals’ batting struggled to find momentum against a disciplined Trinbago bowling attack, with Akeal Hosein and others keeping the runs in check.

Chasing 157 for victory, Trinbago Knight Riders chased down the target with just one ball to spare, finishing at 159/8 in 19.5 overs, clinching a narrow 2-wicket victory. Despite wickets falling at regular intervals, Trinbagos middle and lower order showed resilience under pressure. Hosein contributed wi??th a crucial 20 r??uns, supporting the chase.

Hosein’s all-round performance proved decisive for Trinbago. In addition to his vital 20 runs in the chase, Hosein had earlier taken two wickets with the ball, further solidifying his reputation as a key player for the Knight Riders. For his impactful contributions with both bat and ball, Hosein was deservedly named the Player of the Match.

In the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2024 clash between Antigua and Barbuda Falcons and Barbados Royals at Bridgetown, wicketkeeper Sam Billings delivered a standout moment of brilliance.

Sam Billings’ quick thinking secures crucial run-out

In the 10th over, while BR were cruising at 73/1, Quinton de Kock attempted a premeditated scoop shot off a full-length delivery outside off-stump. The ball took an inside edge and rolled to Billings’ right behind the stumps. Seeing an opportunity, Billings quickly pounced on the ball and, with impeccable precision, threw the stumps down to catch Alick Athanaze well short of his ground. This key run-out ended a threatening 72-run partnership, giving the Falcons a much-needed breakthrough as Athanaze, set o??n 34, was forced to ??depart.

Quinton de Kock and Alick Athanaze’s unfortunate collision

The run-out itself was a result of a chaotic mix-up between the batters, De Kock and Athanaze. Both players, caught off-guar?d, attempted a single after De Kock’s shot, but disaster s??truck when they collided midway through the pitch. The confusion between the batters gave Billings the precious extra seconds needed to pick up the ball and make the throw, dismissing Athanaze. The two batters were visibly frustrated, with de Kock offering an immediate apology, but the damage had already been done. The collision turned the tide of the game, putting Royals in a precarious position at a critical juncture of the chase.

De Kock falls shortly after as rain ends play early

The run-out of Athanaze was just the beginning of the Royals’ troubles, as De Kock fell two overs later for 48, leaving his team at 93/3 in the 12th over. However, the experienced duo of Rovman Powell and David Miller steadied the ship, adding an unbeaten 34 off 17 balls. Just ??as the Royals looked set to regain control, persistent rain forced the game to a premature end. The D/L method came ??into play, and the Royals were declared the winners by 10 runs.
