The Dutch side managed to restrict Nepal to a modest total of 106 runs in 19.2 overs, thanks to impressive bowling performances from Tim Pringle and Logan van Beek. The very next ball, van Beek bowled a back-of-a-length delivery on off stump, which Abinash Bohara tried to hit over long on but only managed to top-ed??ge, resulting in ??an easy catch for Van Beek himself. This double strike ended Nepal’s innings at a meager 106.

In response, the Netherlands had a shaky start, losing opener Michael Levitt for just one run. The team then adopted a cautious approach but continued to lose wickets at regular intervals. In a thrilling Super Smash 2023-2024 encounter on Monday (January 22), the Wellington Firebirds secured a hard-fought victory against the Canterbury Kings, winning by 18 runs. Amidst this gripping clash, the spotlight turned to a sensational moment orchestrated by Canterbury pacer Logan van Beek, who pulled off a remarkable return catch to dismiss Tom Latham.

Tom Latham and Henry Nicholls provide a strong start

Having been asked to bat first, Canterbury’s innings progressed smoothly, reaching 145/1 in 17 overs. However, van Beek’s exceptional performance in the 18th overturned the tide to some extent. The experienced 33-year-old displayed his bowling prowess by removing Henry Nicholls with the first ball of the over. He went on to concede only seven runs?? from the following four deliveries.

Logan van Beek’s sensational catch of Latham alters the game’s course

On the decisive final ball of that over, Van Beek delivered a skillfully placed delivery outside the off-stump, tempting Latham to stretch wide and attempt a forceful launch over the bowler’s head. Latham, in an aggressive bid to maneuver the ball, aimed to drag it from a wide angle and unleash it with power. Nevertheless, the execution did not go as planned.

Latham’s forceful strike sent the ball hurtling straight back at the Van Beek, who stationed in his follow-through position, displayed exceptional reflexes and fielding prowess. Despite the ferocity of Latham’s shot, Van Beek, with remarkable agility, managed to snatch the ball out of the air with just one hand. The catch, executed as a blinder, showcased Van Beek’s extraordinary athleticism and cricketing acumen.

Respectable total by Wellington Firebirds

Despite Van Beek’s brilliance, Canterbury managed to score 26 runs off the final two overs, concluding their innings on a formidable total of 178/4 in 20 overs. Latham emerged as the top scorer for Canterbury, contributing 60 runs off 49 deliveries and forming an 84-run partnership with Nicholls for the second wicket.

Firebirds secure victory over Canterbury Kings

In their pursuit of the target, Canterbury made a solid start with a 39 runs stand. Nonetheless, they lost wickets at regular intervals. Michael Bracewell‘s aggressive innings, marked by three massive sixes, propelled them to 97/3 after 11 overs. Unfortunately, once Bracewell was dismissed, Canterbury’s chase derailed, and they could only manage to reach 160/9 in their allotted 20 overs.

Netherlands, the only associated nation featuring in the ODI World Cup 2023, have been super impr?essive in the multi-team tournament in India. So far, they have performed even better than the defending champions England, having won 2 out of their 6 matches in the tournament.

The key behind the splendid show of the Dutch team is some of their star players who have performed exceptionally wel?l in the competition. Be it batters, bowers or all-rounders, Netherlands players have shown what it takes to outshine their opponents at the international level.

It will be no surprise, if a few Dutch cricketers would be grabbed by the franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 auction, expected to take place in Dubai in December later this year. On that note, let’s have a look at five Netherlands players whom franchises could target in the next auctions:

1) Bas de Leede

Bas de Leede, a dynamic all-rounder, has been a driving force behind the Netherlands’ standout performance in the ODI World Cup. His ability to contribute effectively with both bat and ball has made him a player to watch. De Leede’s aggressive yet controlled style of play, especially his powerful batting in the middle order, has given Netherlands an edge in tight situations.

This versatility is a valuable asset that IPL franchises often seek in their squad members. Additionally, his effective medium-fast bowling can be a handy option for teams in search of multi-dimensional players. De Leede’s consistent and impactful performances make him a strong contender for the IPL 2024 auction.

2) Colin Ackermann

Colin Ackermann‘s consistent and versatile performances have made him a promising prospect for IPL teams. His dependable batting, which includes the ability to accelerate the scoring in the death overs, and his handy off-spin bowling have shown his capability to influence the course of a match. Ackermann’s composure under pressure and adaptability to various T20 scenarios have earned him a reputation as a match-winner.

Notably, Ackermann’s presence in the middle order can stabilize a batting lineup, and his ability to pick up crucial wickets adds value to his all-round skills. IPL franchises in need of a reliable player who can both stabilize and elevate the performance of their team should keep an eye on Ackerman??n as a potential addition to their squad in the next auction.

3) Logan van Beek

Logan van Beek, a fast bowler with a penchant for contributing with the bat, has showcased his versatility and special skills during the ODI World Cup 2023. His impressive pace bowling and the ability ??to extract bounce from surfaces have put him in the spotlight. IPL franchises often seek a reliable fast bowle??r who can deliver vital breakthroughs and hold his nerve in high-pressure situations.

Further, Van Beek’s batting prowess in the lower order adds depth to his skill set, making him a valuable asset for teams looking for a decent bowler who at times can chip in with the bat. His consistency and the ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game make Van Beek a potential IPL target for the 2024 auction.

4) Aryan Dutt

Aryan Dutt, a??n emerging young ta?lent and a proficient off-spinner, has been a revelation with his standout performances in the ODI World Cup. Notably, Dutt often takes up the crucial role of opening the bowling for the Netherlands. His ability to read match situations and provide crucial breakthroughs with the new ball has been particularly noteworthy.

IPL scouts often have an eye for young talents who possess the potential to develop into impactful players over time, and Dutt’s bowling skills seem to align perfectly with this criterion. His ability to adapt to different match scenarios makes him an appealing choice for IPL franchises in search of a promising bowler who can contribute to their squad’s long-term success.

5) Paul van Meekeren

Paul van Meekeren, a consistent wicket-taker with his pace bowling, is another Netherlands player who has turned heads during the ODI World Cup. His knack for picking up crucial wickets, especially in the power?plays and death overs, is a highly sought-after quality in T??20 cricket.

Notably, Van Meekeren’s ability to swing the ball both ways and his deceptive variations have made him a potent force in the bowling department. IPL franchises often prioritize acquiring strike bowlers who can make an impact, and Van Meekeren fits the bill. His ability to break partnerships and put the opposition under pressure could make him an attractive choice for teams looking to bolster their pace bowling arsenal in the IPL 2024 auction.

In the 15th match of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023, South Africa and the Netherlands are squaring off at ?the picturesque HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala.

However, this encounte?r has been marred by rain, resulting in a reduced match format of? 43 overs per side. South Africa won the crucial toss and decided to bowl first. In a spirited bowling performance, the Proteas managed to limit the Netherlands to 245 runs, with the Dutch side losing eight wickets.

Scott Edwards powers Netherlands to a respectable total

Despite a promising start from opener Max O’Dowd, his partner Vikramjit Singh struggled and was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada in the seventh over. O’Dowd himself departed after scoring 18 runs.

Colin Ackermann provided some stability, but Rabada took another wicket by dismissing Bas de Leede. The South African bowlers maintained pressure, and despite a partnership between Sybrand Engelbrecht and Teja Nidamanuru, wickets fell at regular intervals.

However, Scott Edwards and Roelof van der Merwe (29) changed the game’s complexion by putting together a quick 50-run partnership. Edwards reached a well-earned fifty, and van der Merwe added a swashbuckling 29 off 19 balls. Aryan Dutt (23 no) and Edwards finished the?? innings strongly, with the skipper scoring an impressiv??e 78 not out.

South African bowlers Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen, and Rabada claimed two wickets each, with Gerald Coetzee and Keshav Maharaj also contributing to the wickets column.

A pivotal incident occurred on the final delivery of the 34th over when Maharaj delivered a fuller-length ball that pitched around the middle stump line and exhibited a substantial turn away. Batter Logan van Beek lured into a drive, ??ventured slightly outside his crease but was left bamboozled as the ball narrowly evaded the o??utside edge of his bat.

Behind the stumps, wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock seized the opportunity and swiftly dislodged the bails, effecting a crucial stumping that left both teams and the s?pectators in awe of the skill on display.

The ODI World Cup 2023 could’ve witness a historic moment if star all-rounder Logan van Beek, representing the Netherlands, had entered the field in Match 06 of the tournament against New Zealand a?t the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad.

A unique record missed

Van Beek might’ve achieved a record of playing against his country of birth, New Zealand.

Born in ?Christchurch, New Zealand, Van Beek has a Dut?ch heritage through his paternal lineage. His grandparents migrated to New Zealand from the Netherlands in the mid-20th century, making him eligible to represent the Netherlands in international cricket.

Interestingly, Van Beek’s maternal grandfather, Sammy Guillen, achieved the rare distinction of representing both the West Indies and New Zealand in Test cricket during his career.

Other cricketers with similar records

While Van Beek’s feat remains uncompleted, there have been some other cricketers who have represented a country different from their birthplace.

Kevin Pietersen

The attacking batter, Kevin Pietersen, was born in South Africa but represen??ted England from ?2004 to 2014. Pietersen played 10 Tests, 17 ODIs, and 6 T20Is against his birth nation, accumulating 817 runs, 646 runs, and 207 runs, respectively.

Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi

Born into the royal family of Pataudi, Iftikhar Ali Khan Pataudi is remembered not only as the father of the illustrious Indian captain Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi but also as a rare individual who played Test crick?et for both England and India. He appeared in a total of 6 Tests, 3 for England and as many for India.

Kepler Wessels

Kepler Wessels, like Iftikhar, p?layed for two countries. He represented Australia in 24 Tests and 54 ODIs, and South Africa in 16 Tests and 55 ODIs. Although he played against Australia for South Africa, he never faced the country of his birth as he was born in Bloemfontein, South Africa.

The Netherlands have officially announced their 15-member squad for the much-anticipated ODI World Cup 2023, scheduled to kick off on October 5th in India. In a notable development, senior cricketers Paul van Meekeren and Roelof van der Merwe, along with Colin Ackermann, have made their way back into the Netherlands’ squad for the global cricketing extravaganza.

These three players had been notably absent from the squad during the World Cup Qualifier held in Zimbabwe earlier this year due to their county cricket commitments. Despite their absence, Netherlands successfully secured their qualification. The trio’s return is expected to bolster the team significantly for the main event in India. Durham’s Bas de Leede, w?ho played a crucial role in helping the Dutch secure qualification, will also join the squad in Indi??a.

Scott Edwards Continues to Lead

Scott Edwards will continue to? lead the 15-member outfit, and the squad will feature South Africa-born batter Sybrand Engelbrecht. Engelbrecht, with an impressive record of 58 List A games, where he scored 1275 runs at an average of 45.53 and a strike rate of 78.89, along with 54 first-class games and 45 T20s, brings valuable experience to the team.

The Netherlands has made some strategic changes from the World Cup Qualifier squad, omitting Michael Levitt, Vivian Kingma, and Clayton Floyd. However, they have included Noah Croes as a travelling reserve, alongside Kyle Klein. Tim Pringle will also accompany the squad dur??ing the pre-tournament camp, scheduled from Septe??mber 19th to 28th.

Historic Moment for Dutch Cricket

For those unfamiliar with Dutch cricket, the last time the Netherlands participated in an ODI World Cup was in 2011. This year’s World Cup marks their fifth appearance in the prestigious tournament, and fans are eagerly awaiting their performance on the global stage.

Netherlands’ head coach, Ryan Cook, expressed his thoughts on the team’s preparation for the World Cup. In an official statement, he said, “Naturally, our planning and preparation for the World Cup started soon after our qualification in Zimbabwe. Having no bilateral fixtures after the qualifiers enabled us to plan for various scenarios for the duration of the summer. Over the past few months, the players and staff have been hard at work with the full squad being very dedicated and detailed towards achieving our objective in the World Cup. We have an exciting mixture of youth and experience and a unified, cohesive culture which allows those to express their best selves within the group.”
