The fifth and final Test between England and India, scheduled to begin on Friday (September 10), was cancelled due to COVID fears in the Indian camp.

A BCCI statement later said that there has been an offer made to its English counterparts to reschedule the match.

“The BCCI and ECB held several rounds of discussion to find a way to play the Test Match, however, the outbreak of Covid-19 in the Indian team contingent forced the decision of calling off the Old Trafford Test Match.

“In lieu of the strong relationship between BCCI and ECB, the BCCI has offered to ECB a rescheduling of the cancelled Test match. Both the Boards will work towards finding a window to reschedule this Test match,” read BCCI’s statement.

Nevertheless, the Manchester Test cancellation was palpable as fans and former cricketers took to Twitter to react on the drama surrounding the match.

“This is such a shame – as it’s been a wonderful series !” wrote Australian cricket legend Shane Warne.

Ex-England captain Michael Vaughan blamed India for the cancellation, much to the ire of Indian fans.

Former India opener Wasim Jaffer pointed towards England for canceling their tour to South Africa last year, citing COVID-19 fears. Similarly, India were within their rights not to field a team in Manchester.

“England were within their rights back then and so are India now. If anything India honoured their commitment and completed the Oval test despite entire coaching staff getting positive during the game. #ENGvsIND #perspective,” tweeted Jaffer.

The fifth and final Test between England and India, scheduled to start in Manchester at 2:30 pm IST on Friday, has been cancelled over fears of a Covid-19 outbreak in the bio-bubble.

It all happened after Covid-19 disrupted the Indian camp, rendering the visitors unable to field a team.

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) statement read: “Following ongoing conversations with the BCCI, the ECB can confirm that the fifth LV= Insurance Test between England and India Men due to start today at Emirates Old Trafford, will be cancelled.

“Due to fears of a further increase in the number of COVID cases inside the camp, India are regrettably unable to field a team.”

“We send our sincere apologies to fans and partners for this news, which we know will cause immense disappointment and inconvenience to many.”

Team India’s assistant physiotherapist Yogesh Parmar tested positive for Covid-19 on Wednesday, leading to Thursday’s training session and other media commitments being cancelled with players sent into isolation.

India head coach Ravi Shastri, bowling coach Bharat Arun and fielding coach Ramakrishnan Sridhar earlier tested positive for Covid-19 during the fourth Test in London.

Thankfully, all players tested negative for Covid-19, leading to the fifth Test set to be played as per the schedule. But less than an hour before the start of play at the sold-out Old Trafford Stadium, the match was called off.

India’s thumping win over England at The Oval was Virat Kohli’s Midas Test as the Indian captain made the right changes at the right time, and whatever he touched on the final day of the match turned into gold.

Virat joined former Indian skipper Kapil Dev in an elite list after his team beat England by 157 runs in the fourth Test to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series on Monday.

Set a record 368 to win, England collapsed from 100/0 midway through the first session to getting bundled out for 210 soon after the tea break, sparking wild celebrations among the Indian players – particularly Virat – and spectators inside the stadium.

Bollywood actress and Virat’s wife Anushka Sharma was also all over the moon after India’s victory under the captaincy of her husband. The model-turned-actress shared on Instagram a picture of the Indian entire team and congratulated them. Sharing the picture, Anushka wrote: “This team” along with a blue heart emoji.

She also tagged Virat in her post. The picture uploaded by Anushka was then shared by Virat on his Instagram account as well.

Currently, Anushka is in England along with her daughter Vamika after they accompanied Virat to the country in June. Anushka often spends time with Virat’s teammates and their wives.

Anushka and Virat have also been exploring new restaurants in the UK. They last week visited an Indian street food joint, ‘Bundobust’, in Leeds. The couple also enjoyed lunch at a restaurant named ‘Tharavadu’ in the same city.

England head coach Chris Silverwood has named a 16-member squad for the fifth Test against India starting at Old Trafford on Friday, September 10.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler, who missed the 157-run defeat in the fourth Test at the Kennington Oval to be with his wife for the birth of their second child, has returned to the squad for the final match of the series.

Left-arm spinner Jack Leach has also been added to the squad as a second spin option alongside off-spinning all-rounder Moeen Ali.

Batsman Sam Billings, who was included in the fourth Test squad as cover for Jonny Bairstow, has returned to Kent.

With an Ashes series coming up this winter, there have been questions over whether the 39-year-old pacer James Anderson should be rested for the fifth Test.

“He [Anderson] and I will have a conversation together, he will have input into that without a shadow of a doubt, James knows his own body and he will certainly give me an honest opinion of where he is at, and it is certainly one I will listen to. I know he won’t want to miss any cricket but we have to look after him,” said Silverwood in his statement.

England squad for 5th Test against India:

Joe Root (c), Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler (wk), Sam Curran, Haseeb Hameed, Dan Lawrence, Jack Leach, Dawid Malan, Craig Overton, Ollie Pope, Ollie Robinson, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.

Former Indian cricketer VVS Laxman has come up with a strong statement for ‘out of form’ Ajinkya Rahane. Laxman feels that Team India vice-captain should be given a break amid repeated failures with the bat in the ongoing Test series against England.

Rahane has scored 109 runs in 4 Tests at an average of 15.57, failing to contribute for his side at crunch situations. He got out for an eight-ball duck in the second innings of the Oval Test in good batting conditions.

Speaking about Rahane’s lackluster performance in recent matches, Laxman said: “It’s time to give Rahane a break. I am not sure of what the future holds for him. He is a quality player and I always believe that quality players come back into the team. But, the kind of form and confidence he has shown and the body language when he was out there in the middle Not once during his eight-ball innings did Ajinkya Rahane look convincing.”

Laxman also added that Hanuma Vihari, who has played county championship before the Test series in England, might get a chance in the fifth and final Test at the Old Trafford, starting September 10.

“You don’t want to go into a Test match with that kind of a mindset, especially in case of a senior batsman. I just feel, come the Old Trafford Test match, there may be a change and Vihari may get a chance ahead of Ajinkya Rahane,” Laxman told ESPNCricinfo.

Meanwhile, here’s how fans reacted to Rahane’s recent dismissal:

On the third day of the fourth Test between England and India at the Kennington Oval in London, Indian opener KL Rahul seemed unhappy after being given out ‘caught behind’.

In the 34th over of India’s second innings, England seamer James Anderson induced a faint edge from Rahul. On-field umpire Alex Wharf didn’t believe there was one and shook his head as England players appealed in unison. England skipper Joe Root then had to ask for DRS, which showed an interesting thing.

The reason umpire didn’t believe that Rahul had nicked the ball was because he heard a massive noise of bat hitting the pad. Rahul was also convinced that the sound came from the bat hitting his back pad and not the ball kissing his willow.

But, the third umpire Michael Gough gave his decision in England’s favour, and Rahul had to walk back to the pavilion for 46. The 29-year-old shook his head in protest and even gestured to the on-field umpire that his bat had struck his pads.

KL Rahul loses 15% of his match fees

However, the match referee and umpires were not kind in their consideration towards Rahul as he has been fined 15 percent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct.

Rahul was found to have breached Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an Umpire’s decision during an International Match.”

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of Rahul – for whom it was the first offence in a 24-month period. Rahul accepted his mistake; therefore, there was no need for a formal hearing.

Rohit Sharma’s fascinating ton gave India an edge over England in the fourth Test at Kennington Oval in London on Saturday.

Rohit made 127 off 256 balls – his first Test century outside India – guiding his team to a lead of 150 plus runs.

He added an 83-run stand for the opening wicket with KL Rahul, then 153 for the second with Cheteshwar Pujara, who scored an impressive 61 off 127 balls.

When Rohit completed his hundred by hitting a six off Moeen Ali, all the Indian players and support staff gave a standing ovation to the ‘Hitman’ of cricket. India captain Virat Kohli was seen jumping with joy on the balcony.

Rohit’s wife Ritika Sajdeh was also present in the stadium on Day 3 of the Oval Test. Ritika celebrated her husband’s success by sending a flying kiss to the Indian opener – the moment which was caught on camera.

However, England found some inspiration with the second new ball as seamer Ollie Robinson removed both Rohit and Pujara in the same over.

Captain Kohli then walked in to calm the situation with all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. Before bad light stopped play, Kohli was on 22 while Jadeja was at nine with 13 overs still left to be bowled.

After a stop-start career in Test cricket, India batsman Rohit Sharma finally broke his shackles overseas with a gritty hundred against England at the Kennington Oval in London on Saturday.

Rohit, who walked in to bat as an opener in just his sixth Test match outside India (16th overall), saw off another testing morning session against the English seamers after the host took a 99-run lead in their first innings on day two.

The Mumbaikar made a slow start but added a crucial 83-run stand for the opening wicket with KL Rahul, who departed for 46 (101). After Rahul’s dismissal, next batsman Cheteshwar Pujara continued his attack on the home team while Rohit pierced the gaps on loose deliveries.

Rohit, however, reached his maiden overseas Test hundred in the 64th over of India’s second innings with a massive six over long-on off Moeen Ali. The 34-year-old has previously scored seven Test centuries, all of which came in home conditions. He also completed 15,000 international runs during the innings.

The majority of his runs have been scored in ODIs. In 227 matches, Rohit has scored 9,205 ODI runs.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to Rohit’s special hundred at the Oval:

Team India captain Virat Kohli did not include off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in his playing eleven for the fourth successive time in the ongoing Test series against England.

Kohli hardly had to apply any mind while picking the pacers after injuries to Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami. But there was a need to pick any one between the world No. 2 Test bowler Ashwin and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja.

While including Jadeja in the final XI, Kohli said: “It’s something that we thought is a good match-up for Jadeja as well, because mostly all our seamers bowl over the wicket. It’s a nice little spot for the left-handers as well.

“I think according to the match-ups, it fits perfectly for our team ?plus the balance he is giving us with the bat as well currently,” added Kohli at the toss for the fourth Test.

However, this reasoning was not accepted by many as Ashwin has dismissed the most left-handers in Test cricket.

In fact, Ashwin is the only bowler in Test history to dismiss 200 plus left-handed batsmen in the format.

Former England cricketer Nick Compton didn’t mince any words in saying that Virat has ‘personal issues’ with Ashwin due to which the latter has been benched for successive games.

“Please can someone explain how Kohli obvious personal issues with Ashwin are allowed to cloud an obvious selection issue? #india,” Compton tweeted.

Meanwhile, former England captain Michael Vaughan was aghast on Twitter. “The non selection of ashwinravi99 has to be greatest NON selection we have ever witnessed across 4 Tests in the UK !!! 413 Test wickets & 5 Test 100s !!!! Madness,” wrote Vaughan.

In the last two years before the England series, Jadeja had taken 29 wickets in 13 Tests at a strike rate of 69, while Ashwin has taken 71 wickets in 14 Tests with a much better strike rate of 46. There is hardly any doubt that Jadeja as a batsman has improved in recent years, but as a bowler he has faded during the same time.
