South Africa edged past Pakistan by 11 runs in an exhilarating opening T20I of the ??Pakistan tour of South Africa 2024-25 at Kin?gsmead, Durban. An all-round performance by George Linde, who claimed four wickets and scored a quick-fire 48, earned him the Player of the Match title.

South Africa’s power-packed batting performance

Opting to bat first after winning the toss, South Africa had a shaky start, losing Rassie van der Dussen for a golden duck in the first over. Reeza Hendricks and Matthew Br??eetzke added minimal contributions, leav??ing the hosts at 29/3.

David Miller anchored the innings with a scintillating knock of 82 off 40 balls, smashing 4 fours and 8 towering sixes. His partnership with Linde, who contributed 48 runs off just 24 balls, including 3 fours and 4 sixes, was the turning point. The duo combined for a 77-run stand that took the team to a competitive total of 183/9.

Pakistan’s bowlers had mixed results. Shaheen Afridi was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3??/22, while Abrar Ahmed also bagged three wickets but was expensive, conceding 37 runs in his four overs. Abbas Afridi chipped in with two crucial wickets, while Haris Ra??uf and Sufiyan Muqeem struggled to keep the runs in check.

Pakistan falls short in a spirited chase

Chasing 184, Pakista??n’s innings began on a disastrous note as skipper Babar Azam was dismissed for a four-ball duck. Mohammad Rizwan anchored the innings with a resilient 74 off 62 balls, including 5 fours and 3 sixes, but lacked consistent support from the other end.

Saim Ayub provided an early spark with a blazing 31 off just 15 balls, lacing his k?nock with 7 boundaries. However, wickets fell at regular intervals, with none of the middle-order batsmen managing to convert their starts. Tayyab Tahir’s 18 off 18 and Shaheen Afridi’s late cameo of 9 off 6 offered fleeting hope, but the target remained out of reach.

George Linde was instrumental with the ball, dismantling Pakistan’s middle order with figures of 4/21 in h?is four overs. Kwena Maphaka and Ottniel Baartman provided crucial breakthroughs, while Andile Simelane chipped in with a wicket despite being expensive.

South Africa made a comeback in the ongoing five-match T20I series against West Indies after winning the second game by 16 runs at National Cricket Stadium in Gr??enada on Sunday. So now, the series is levelled at 1-1.

Chasing 167 to win, the hosts could only manage to score 150/9, thanks to the outstanding bowling by George Linde, Kagiso Rabada and Tabraiz Shamsi. Left-arm wrist spinner Shamsi and the orthodox bowler Linde frustrated the home team in the middle of the innings by taking the mome?ntum out of their chase.

Shamsi conceded only 16 runs in his quota of 4 overs and bagged the prized scalp of West Indies skipper Kieron Pollard (1). Similarly, Linde gave away only 19 runs in his 4 overs and picked up the important wickets of Nicholas Pooran (9) and Andre Russell (5).

On the other hand, Rabada dismissed the likes of Andre Fletcher (35), Chris Gayle (8), and Dwayne Bravo (9).

Although, Fabian Allen did raise some hopes for the Windies by playing a quickfire knock of 34 runs from 12 deliveries, including five sixes. In the final over, bowled by Lungi Ngidi, the? Pollard and Co. needed 36 runs to win the contest.

Allen did his best by smashing maximums off the first two balls. Afterwards, Ngidi bowled a dot ball, but then he delivered a wide which kept faint chances alive for Windies. Allen then hit another six and gave hints of a superb finish, but he was trapped lbw next ball, and South Africa eventually won the thr??illing contest.

Earlier, Temba Bavuma (46) and Reeza Hendricks (42) played valuable knocks to help the Proteas post 166/7 on the scoreboard. Kevin Sinclair (2/23) and Obed McCoy (3/25) were ??the pick ??of the bowlers for the Men in Maroon.

On Monday, South Africa registered a comfortable victory over Pakistan in the second T20I by six wickets at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesbur??g. The win propelled Proteas to level the ongoing three-match T20I series 1-1. The visitors had earlier w??on the series opener by four wickets.

Aiden Markram’s scintillating effort from the willow helped his side to bounce back in the series. The right-handed batsman scored a remarkable half-century as the home team chased down the paltry target of 141 in 14 overs.

Markram smashed 54 from 30 deliveries at a brilliant strike rate of 180, featuring seven fours and three sixes. Apart from the 26-year-old, captain Heinrich Klaasen made a valuable? contribution of unbeaten 36 off 21 balls to take his team over the finish line.

For the tourists, spinner Usman Qadir picked up two wickets for 26 in 3 overs, while Hasan Ali and Mohammad Hasnain bagged one scalp each.

Earlier, South Africa bowlers showed tremendous discipline and restricted the Men in Green at 140/9 in their allotted 20 overs. For Pakistan, only their skipper Babar Azam was the main highlight. He scored a gutsy half-century before Sisanda Magala cut short his innings. Except for Babar, senior lad Mohammad Hafeez scored 32 off?? 23 balls to tak?e his side towards a competitive total.

Left-arm spinner George Linde was another major contributor for South Africa in the stunning victory. The all-rounder picked up three wickets for just 23 runs in his quota of 4 overs. Lizaad Williams, who was playing only his second T20I, also earned a three-wicket haul but conceded 35 runs at a poor economy of 8.80. Post the match, Linde was named ‘Player of the Match’ for his outstanding show.

Proteas left-arm spinner Keshav Mah?araj has been ruled out of the third Test against India in Ranchi due to a shoulder injury, Cricket South Africa confirmed on Sunday.

Maharaj injured his right shoulder while fielding on Day 2 of the second Test in Pune but managed to bat in? both the inning??s, scoring a gritty half-century in first innings.

“An MRI showed that Keshav has sustained an injury to a muscle in his right shoulder, which was strapped in order for him to bat yesterday. He was reassessed this morning particularly with regards to bowling and showed significant discomfort during bowling,” South Africa team doctor Ramjee Hashendra said in a statement.

“Based on this morning’s assessment and the findings of the MRI, the medical team feels that he will not be fit in time for the next Test match in six days’ time. The nature and extent of the injury would mean that he will probably return to play in 14 to 21 days based on his progress during the rehabilitation phase,” he added.

Maharaj will be replaced by another left-arm spinner George Linde in the Ran?chi Test.

Linde was part of the South Africa A side that toured India for a List A series prior to the senior side’s arrival, and was in the T20I squad, although he did not play a game.

South Africa lost the fir??st Test by 203 runs, second Test by an innings and 137 runs and will now be looking to end their tour on a high w??ith a positive result in Ranchi.
