Former Indian cricketer Chetan Chauhan died at the age of 73 on Sunday (August 16), after succumbing to the deadly coronavirus. The Uttar Pradesh cabi??net minister was tested positive for the disease last month and was re??cently shifted to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Chetan is survived by his wife Sangeeta and son Vinayak.

“My elder brother Shri Chetan Chauhan has left us today after fighting a good battle. I sincerely thank everyone who had prayed for his recovery. His son Vinayak will be reaching anytime and we will then perform last rites,” brother Pushpendra told PTI.

Chauhan played 40 Test matches for India and scored over 2000 runs at an average of 31.58. Although he couldn’t score a century in his Test career, the right-hander had 16 half-centuries to his name.

Along with Sunil Gavaskar, Chetan formed a formidable opening partnership in the traditional format of the game. The duo scored over 3000 runs at an astounding average of 53.7??5.

Chauhan’s most memorable opening-stand with Gavaskar came in 1979 at the Oval where the duo combined for a massive 213 runs and drove India almost to the victory, just nine runs short of the target as the match ended in the draw.

He played his last Test match against New Zealand in 1981. Outside cricket, he had a very successful career as a politician, and he was officially associated with Bharatiya Janat??a Party (BJP).

The cricketer-turned-politician was elected twice to the Lok Sabha in 1991?? and 1998 from Amroha c??onstituency.

Former Indian opener Chetan Chauhan, on Friday, was diagnosed COVID-19 positive and was admitted to Sanjay Gandhi PGI Hospital in Lucknow??.

The family members of the former Lok Sabha Member of Parliame?nt will undergo COVID-19 tests on Sunday and have been put under home quarantine.

Chauhan holds the Sainik welfare, home guards, PRD an??d Civil Security ministry in the Uttar Pradesh cabinet.

As soon a?s the news broke out, former Indian cricket??ers RP Singh and Aakash Chopra took to Twitter to pour in their wishes for Chauhan.

The news came in the aftermath of the positive diagnosis of Bollywood’s ‘Shehenshah’ Amitabh Bachchan and his son Abhishek Bachchan.

Earlier, Scottish international Majid Haq was also diagnosed positive for the ailment, which has caused a global pandemic. Also, the likes of Shahid Afridi and Taufiq Umar were diagnosed with the same.

Last month before the routine check-up for the UK tour, ten Pakistani cricketers were found to be COVID-19 positive. However, a week later, nine out of ten playe??rs were te??sted COVID-19 negative and sent to England.

Coming back to Chauhan, the ??former Indian cricketer forged a successful partnership with batting maestro Sunil Gavaskar, amassing over 3,000 Test runs, piling up ten century stands d??uring the 1970s.

Having played for Delhi and Maharashtra in domestic cricket, Chauh??an has represented the country ?in as many as 47 games (40 Tests and 7 ODIs).
