Ravichandran Ashwin‘s all-round performance was the cornerstone of India’s comprehensive win over Bangladesh on Day 4 of the first Test held in Chennai on Sunday (September 22). Ashwin showcased his class with both bat and ball, scoring a crucial century (113 off 133 balls) in India’s first innings and taking six wickets (6/88) in Bangladesh’s second innings. His contributions were vital as India set a massive 515 runs target and eventually triumphed by 280 runs, starting the series on a high note.

India’s strong start and key contributions

Despite early setbacks, India managed to post a solid total of 376 in their first innings. Yashasvi Jaiswal anchored the innings with a patient 56, but it was Ravindra Jadeja (86) and Ashwin’s counter-attacking partnership that rescued India from 144/6. Their stand pushed India to a competitive score, while Bangladesh’s Hasan Mahmud shone with fig??ures of 5/83, offering the visitors some hope but failing to stop the Indian lower order from piling on runs.

Bangladesh crumbles under pressure

Bangladesh faltered in response, folding for a mere 149 in their first innings. Jasprit Bumrah led India’s bowling attack, taking 4/50, with Akash Deep and Jadeja offering ample support. Bangladesh’s batters struggled against the relentless Indian bowling, failing to mount a significant challenge, leaving them with a massive deficit to overcome.

Their fluent stroke play extended India’s lead and allowed Rohit Sharma to declare with confidence. The partnership not only s??olidified India’s dominance but ensured that Bangladesh would face an insurmountable target of 515 for victory.

Ravichandran Ashwin’s masterful bowling

While Bangladesh’s second innings showed brief signs of resistance, with Najmul Hossain Shanto (82) and Shadman Islam (35) putting up a fight, Ashwin was once again the wrecker-in-chief. His six-wicket haul, supported by Jadeja’s three wickets, dismantled the batting lineup, dismissing Bangladesh for 234. India sealed the game with a dominant 280-run victory, taking a commanding 1-0 lead in the series. Ashwin was eventually named Player of the Match for his exceptional all round performance both with the bat and ball.

Jasprit Bumrah’s masterclass delivery dismisses Shadman Islam

In just the first over of the innings, Bumrah executed a perfect setup. Bowling several outswingers, he lured Shadman into believing the next ball would follow suit. However, Bumrah switched angles and came around the wicket, delivering a length ball that held its line and straightened towards the off stump. Indian cricket superstar Virat Kohli shattered a wall at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai during a practice session ahead of the two-match Test series against Bangladesh.? The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 final between Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday (May 26) witnessed a dramatic moment that left Bollywood actress Janhvi Kapoor stunned. Accompanied by actor Rajkummar Rao, Janhvi was present at the stands to promote their new film “Mr. and Mrs. Mahi” when the incident occurred.

The crucial moment

During the 16th over of SRH’s innings, KKR’s veteran off-spinner Sunil Narine was tightening the screws, restricting the SRH batters. SRH skipper Pat Cummins, fighting valiantly amid a batting collapse, faced a tossed-up delivery from Narine. Sensing an opportunity for a big shot, Cummins went?? for it but mistimed the ball, sending it high up? in the air.

Mitchell Starc’s costly error

In a moment that could have turned the tide of the match, Cummins received a lifeline when KKR’s Mitchell Starc dropped a straightforward catch. Starc’s lapse in concentration allowed Cummins to escape with just 11 runs to his name. At a crucial juncture when SRH was struggling at 97/8, Starc’s missed opportunity gave them a much-needed reprieve. Instead of facing the possibility of being bowled out for under 100, SRH managed to cross the century mark, thanks to Starc’s error.

Nevertheless, despite Cummins’ attempt to stabilize SRH after the dropped catch, his innings was short-lived as he fell for 24 runs, becoming the final SRH batter to be dismissed. With Cummins’ departure, KKR seized the opportunity to wrap up SRH’s innings quickly.

In a remarkable bowling display, KKR bowled out SRH for a mere 113 runs in 18.3 overs, marking the lowest total in IPL finals’ history. Every bowler deployed by KKR captain Shreyas Iyer contributed to the team’s success, showcasing their bowling depth and versatility. The dropped catch by Starc proved to be a solitary blemish in an otherwise impressive performance in the first innings. Starc initiated SRH’s downfall by dismissing Abhishek Sharma (2) and Rahul Tripathi (9) during the power play, setting the tone for KKR’s dominant bowling display.

KKR clinch IPL 2024 title with dominant chase in final

KKR effortlessly chased down the target with Venkatesh Iyer‘s explosive unbeaten 52 off just 26 balls leading the charge. Despite early setbacks with Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Narine departing, KKR’s batting depth shone through as they cruised to victory. Shreyas Iyer‘s quick cameo further solidified their dominance. With a total of 114/2 in just 10.3 overs and a remarkable run rate of 10.85, KKR showcased their prowess and claimed the IPL 2024 title in a commanding fashion, marking a memorable triumph in the tournament.

Despite emerging as the prime contender to win the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the halfway point of the season, Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) campaign met its conclusion before the final. The Sanju Samson-led team suffered a 36-run defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) i??n Qualifier 2 at the MA Chidambaram S?tadium on Friday (May 24).

RR’s commendable bowling effort falls short

Bowling first, Rajasthan did a commendable job of restricting Hyderabad’s intimidating batting unit, which has broken records aplenty this season, to a score of 175/9. Key bowlers managed to keep the Hyderabad batters in check, showcasing their skill and strategy. However, despite their best efforts, the target proved too challenging for the Rajasthan’ batters, who could only accumulate 139 runs in response.

Sanju Samson’s post-match reflections

After the game, Samson credited Hyderabad’s spinners and noted the pitch’s unexpected behavior in the second innings, acknowledging that their middle-over performance against spin was lacking and the turning wicket was well-utilized by the opposition.

“This was a big game. I am proud of our bowlers, but we were short in the middle overs. Their use of spin against our right-handed batsmen was good; we lost the game against spin in the middle-overs. When the ball was turning, we could’ve used sweep or used our feet, but they bowled well. The wicket started behaving differently in the second innings. The ball started turning a bit and they used that advantage really well,” Samson said in the post-match presentation.

Unpredictable conditions

Samson discussed the unpredictable conditions, noting the absence of dew and increased ball turn in the second innings, which complicated their chase. He reflected on their batting strategy, acknowledging they could have used the crease better, but praised Shahbaz Ahmed and Abhishek Sharma for their effective bowling.

“It was hard to assess and guess when dew would come; it didn’t come and it started turning a lot in the second innings, which made things difficult for us. The unexpected turn of the ball added to the challenges faced by Rajasthan Royals during their chase. Samson also reflected on the team’s batting strategy, noting, When the ball was stopping and turning, we could have used the crease a bit better but they (Shahbaz Ahmed and Abhishek Sharma) bowled well and didn’t give us anything to work with,” the 29-year-old concluded.
