The Indian Premier League (IPL) has witnessed numerous memorable performances over the years, from scinti??llating centuries to breathtaking hat-tricks. However, amidst the glory of batting fireworks, there ha??ve been instances where bowlers have faced the wrath of marauding batsmen, resulting in some embarassing bowling figures.

In the ongoing clash between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Gujarat Titans (GT), Mohit Sharma, the experienced campaigner, ended up featuring in an unwanted record. In a match that saw fireworks from the bat and despair for the bowlers, Mohit endured a catastrophic outing, registering the worst bowling figures ever witnessed in the tournament’s history.

Mohit Sharma’s forgettable performance

Mohit’s dismal figures of none for 73 in his quota of four overs left cricket aficionados stunned and Gujarat Titans reeling. The seamer’s miseries culminated in the 20th over of the innings when Delhi Capitals’ skipper Rishabh Pant launched an onslaught, pummeling Mohit for an as?tonishing 31 runs.

Rishabh Pant’s punishing assault

While Pant remained unbeaten on a blistering 88 off just 43 deliveries, it was his merciless treatment of Mohit that stood out. The left-hander plundered 62 runs off Mohit’s bowling alone, decimating the seamer with four towering sixes and a boundary off the final five deliveries he faced. With this disastrous spell, Mohit joined a dubious club, becoming only the second bowler in IPL history to concede 70-plus runs in a single match.

In a significant blow to the finalist of the 2023 edition, Gujarat Titans’ (GT) preparations for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, veteran seamer Mohammed Shami has been ruled out due to a left ankle injury. Shami, a linchpin in the Titans’ bowling lineup, will be sorely missed for his knack of providing crucial breakthroughs and maintaining composure in pressure situations.

Void in Gujarat Titans’ bowling lineup

Shami’s absence creates a noticeable void in the Titans’ bowling department, necessitating prompt and strategic adjustments by the team management as they gear up for the challenges of the IPL 2024 season. His experience and skill set make him a key asset, and his exclusion prompts the Titans to explore alternative options to maintain a balanced squad.

Injury forces surgery in the UK

The decision to exclude Shami from IPL 2024 stems from a left ankle injury that requires surgical intervention. The 33-year-old seamer, having traveled to London in late January, initially attempted to address the issue with specialized ankle injections. However, the injections failed to yield the desired results, leading? to the unavoidable conclusion that surgery is the only viable option. Shami is set to undergo the medical procedure in the UK, marking a challenging phase in his cricketing journey.

Imminent surgery raises questions for Titans

With Shami undergoing surgery and facing a period of recovery, the Titans face questions about structuring their bowling lineup, finding an apt replacement, and adapting their strategy for the upcoming IPL campaign. The team management’s ability to navigate these challenges will play a crucial role in determining the Titans’ performance in the IPL 2024 season.

Introducing Mohammad Kaif, the younger brother of injured Shami, as a replacement underscored the potential for familial talent in the Titans’ setup. In 6 games in Ranji this year, he picked up 17 wickets. He’s also handy with the bat, as he showed by scoring 45 hard runs on the green track against Uttar Pradesh’s bowling, led by Indian experienced international Bhuvneshwar Kumar. While stepping into his brother’s shoes may carry expectations, Kaif has been honing his skills and showcasing promise in domestic cricket. In a country where people revere cricketers, making it into the pl??aying XI of their national side is the common fantasy of all players.

When a cricketer starts playing cricket at?? a young age, he is motivated to toil hard seeing his heroes do just the same at the international level.

However, the competition gets tough as one progress upwards since the national side is selected based on rigo?rous plans. The unluckiest are the ones who are chosen in the squad but never gets to show their skills on the field.

Here are five cricketers who were added to the squad but never played for Team India:

Dheeraj Jadhav

Dheeraj Jadhav
Dheeraj Jadhav ( Image Source: Twitter)

Dheeraj Jadhav is a Maharashtra opener who piled up 1066 runs in just 12 innings in the 2003/04 Ranji Trophy.
His batting brilliance earned him a call-up to the national side in the 4th Test against Australia at home in 2004 but couldn’t break in as Gautam Gambhir was handed the cap.

Jadhav didn’t lose hope as he kept on besieging the opponents with his bat at the inter-state tournaments. But the efforts of the former openers went in vain as Gambhir and Virender Sehwag cemente?d their spots as openers in the Indian cricket? team.

The Malegaon-born amassed 7679 runs in? his First-class career in 111 matches before retiring 2015.

Ranadeb Bose

Ranadeb Bose

Ranadeb Bose, with his splendid bowling performance in the domestic circuit, saw himself winning an opportunity to be selected for the 2007 England tour of India.

The Bengal pacer p?icked up 57 wickets in just eight games at a strike rate of 39.4 during the 2006/07 Ranji Trophy.

But the then 28-year-old couldn’t find a place in the playing XI as RP Singh, Zaheer Khan, and S Sreesanth made it into the wings ahead of him.

Ishwar Pandey

Ishwar Pandey

Ishwar Pandey had scalped 48 wickets in 8 matches in the 2012/13 Ranji Trophy and was the tournament’s highest wicket-taker.

The 6′ 2″ bowler possessed the ability to swing the ball at around 130 kmph and was also a trainee at the MRF Pace Academy.

Earning a call for the 2014 New Zealand tour, P??andey was dismayed at not being given a chance to pl??ay throughout the leg.

The pacer was also bought by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ahead of the 2014 IPL auctions.

Basil Thampi

Basil Thampi

Another pacer Basil Thampi approached the selector’s radar after receiving the emerging player of the season award in IPL 2017.

Picked up in the T20 squad against Sri Lanka in 2017, Thampi didn’t get a chance on the field as inexperienced bowlers like Mohammed Siraj, Washington Sundar and Jaydev Unadkat were preferred ahead of him.

After that, the Kerala cricketer was dropped from the India A team and also couldn’t justify his place in Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). He could only pick six wickets in the eight games he played in successive seasons.

Deepak Hooda

Deepak Hooda

Deepak Hooda is ??another player who was picked for the same T20 series a?s Thampi against Sri Lanka in 2017 but warmed the bench.

He was also selected for the N?idahas trophy only to miss the cut. However, Hooda maintained his appearances in the IPL, scoring 741 runs from 76 matches at a decent strike rate of 131.38.

In the recently postponed IPL 2021, Hooda represented Punjab Kings (PBKS) and had aggregated 116 runs from 8 matc?hes with the help of a half-century.

For a game still struggling to overcome its colonial past, the emergence of Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2008 was undoubtedly a bre??akthrough moment in the history of cricket, spanning over two centuries.

A brainchild of Lalit Modi – the tournament has gone from strength to strength, and also made its name among the most lucrative franchise leagues around the world.

It wouldn’t be a slight exaggeration to comment that the immense success of the league has cemented BCCI’s position as the ‘world leader of cricketâ€?for years to come.

Providing an incredible platform to the y?oung talents to showcase their skill is perhaps the most signifi??cant contribution of the IPL to the cricketing world. One might have lost count of a number of players who shot to prominence after playing the IPL.

For lots of young talents coming from the distant part of the world, the league had been the inflexion point in their career. Whether it is Rashid Khan’s masterful spin, or Jasprit Bumrah’s toe-crushing yorkers, or Hardik Pandya’s blitzkrieg – all these acts first made their appearance in the IPL.

Every ?year, the league rewards a promising youngster with an awa??????????????????????????rd.

Basil Thampi picked 12 wickets in 11 matches for the now-defunct Gujarat Lions (GL) in 2017 season. Although he didn’t pick too many wickets, his effectiveness in death overs, and the ability to bowl perfect yorkers, made him the favourite to grab the award.

Thampi now plies his trade for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH).

11.) 2018: Rishabh Pant (Delhi Capitals)

During a T20 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Lions in Hyderabad, a very funny incident took place during the 2nd inni?ngs of the game.

This all happened on the last delivery of 10th over when Moises Henriques played a shot and ran for a single. David Warner, who was at the non-striker’s end, saw that bowler Basil Thampi had lost his shoe on his follow through. Warne??r st??opped there, first handed the shoe to Thampi and then completed his single.

It was an act of kindness from one of the best? batsmen in? the world.
