Former New Zealand Women’s captain Amy Satterthwaite has joined the Adelaide Strikers as their assistant coach for the forthcoming Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) season.

Notably, Satterthwaite bid farewell to international cricket in May earlier this year. She is White Ferns’ most capped women’s ODI player with 145 matches and has scored 6,423 runs and picked up 76 wickets for her country.

This will be Satterthwaite’s first time as coach of a professional cricket side, though she has served as a mentor to the Canterbury team in the New Zealand domestic circuit. Satterthwaite has been a star at the WBBL as well, having amassed almost 1,500 runs and taken 44 wickets, including a hat-trick for Hobart Hurricanes in the second year of the tournament.

“The WBBL is such a quality competition and one that I have been fortunate to play in over the years. I absolutely loved my time on the field playing with and against some of the best in the world, and I know the standard of the local talent is extremely high,” said Satterthwaite as quoted by Adelaidestrikers.com.au.

“I have always had great respect for the Adelaide Strikers; they have always been a competitive franchise, and the squad looks strong again this season after a brilliant performance last year. Hopefully I can bring a fresh perspective to the coaching group and lean on my experience to help the team go that next step this summer,” she added.

The upcoming eighth season of the WBBL will start on October 13, with the Strikers beginning their campaign two days later against Sydney Sixers in Mackay. On the appointment of Satterthwaite, Strikers Head Coach Luke Williams said the White Ferns cricketer was a welcom??e addition to the coachi??ng group.

“Amy has achieved so much throughout her playing career, and she brings natural leadership qualities that will be extremely valuable to our team. She has a great cricket mind, knows this competition better than most and will really be able to connect with our players both on and off the field. We can’t wait to welcome her to Adelaide,” said Williams.

Former New Zealand captain Amy Satterthwaite has announced her retirement from international cricket on Thursday (May 26). New Zealand Cricket (NZC) confirmed t?he development after Satterthwaite was not offered a cen?tral contract for the 2022-23 season.

Satterthwaite, who is White Ferns’ most-capped cricketer, will continue to play in the domestic circuit. The Canterbury cricketer will also feature in England’s The Hundred in August as she has a contract with Manchester Originals.

“It is with a degree of sadness that I announce my retirement from international cricket. It has been a tough few days after learning of NZC’s decision to head in a new direction and contract some younger cricketers. I’m disappointed not to be receiving a contract and believe I still had more to offer; however, I respect NZC’s decision, and I wish the White Ferns all the best as they embark on an exciting winter of cricket, including the Commonwealth Games,” said Satterthwaite in a statement.

“I’m immensely proud of my journey with the White Ferns and especially taking the time away to give birth to our daughter, Grace, before returning to play international cricket. I didn’t know if I would ever make it back to the top level, and I hope my story can inspire other mums and mums-to-be that it is possible to follow your career dreams and start a family,” she added.

The batting all-rounder made her debut in a T20I game against Australia in 2007 and followed it up with an ODI debut just a co?uple of days later against the s??ame opposition.

Satterthwaite overall played 145 ODIs and 111 T20Is, scoring 4639 and 1784 runs, respectively. She has seven hundreds and 27 half-centuries to her name in the 50-over format. When it comes to ??bowling, the Christchurch-born has taken 50 wickets in ODIs and 26 in the shortest format.

In the eighth match of the ongoing ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup 2022, New Zealand comprehensively defeated India to register their second triumph in the?? tournament.

Put to bat first, the hosts posted a competitive total of 260/9 on the board in their allotted 50 overs. Amy Satterthwaite and Amelia Kerr shined with the bat and i??nspired White Ferns to come back after losing both openers at 54 in 11 overs.

The duo formed a crucial stand of 67 runs for the third wicket before Rajeshwari Gayakwad dismissed Kerr?? for a well made 50 runs off 64 deliveries. Satterthwaite maintained her end alive and kept on scoring runs.

The batting all-rounder was looking set to reach the triple-figure but was undone by Pooja Vastrakar in the 43rd over. Satterthwaite scored 75 from 84 balls with the help of nine boundaries. Wicketkeeper-batter Katey Martin chipped in with a valuable 51-ball 41 to ensure New Zea?land br?eached the 250-run mark.

Vastrakar was the pic??k of the bowler for India, taking a four-wicket haul while conceding 34 runs in her quota of 10 overs. Gayakwad also bowled well and bagged a couple of scalps for ??46 in 10 overs.

In reply, India never looked like they were in the chase except for Harmanpreet Kaur, who scored a fighting knock of 71 runs off 63 deliveries, including 6 fours and 2 sixes. However, Harmanpreet didn’t get enough support as India kept losing wickets at regular intervals. The Mithali Raj-led side eventually got bundled out for 198, losing the contest by 62 runs.

For New Zealand, Kerr, who smashed a brilliant half-century, contributed with the ball as well, taking a three-fer for 56 in nine overs. Apart from Kerr, Lea Tahuhu also shined as she bagged three wickets while giving away only 17 ru??ns in he??r quota of 10 overs.
