West Indies women all-rounder Deandra Dottin has announced her retirement from international cricket with immediate effect on Monday (August 1). The announcement came a few hours after Barbados’s nine-wicket loss against Australia in the ongoing Commonwealth Games Women’s Cricket Competition 2022.

Notably, in the contest, Dottin conceded 25 runs in the one over after scoring a 22-ball 8. Overall, she is West Indies’ most-capped international cricketer, having played 124 T20Is and 143 ODIs since her debut in June 2008.

Dottin has scored 3727 ODI runs at an average of 30.54, including three hundreds, and 2697 T20I runs – 2681 for West Indies -with two centuries. The Barbados-born shared a lengthy retirement note on Twitter in which she mentioned that the current team environment has been non-conductive to her ability to thrive.

“To whom it may concern. Please accept this letter as my formal retirement from the senior women’s West Indies team, effective July 1, 2022. This announcement has come with much contemplation as cricket has always been a passion of mine,” wrote Dottin in her statement.

“However, when the passion burns out, one has to take time to reassess their commitment. There have been many obstacles during my cricket career that I have had to overcome, however, the current climate and team environment has been non-conductive (conducive) to my ability to thrive and reignite my passion.”

“I am appreciate (appreciative) of the opportunities afforded to me, and I have ruminated on my decision over a period of time. Playing for the West Indies and representing the region has been an honour. During my 14 years of playing, I have trained at my best and grown as a player physically, mentally and emotionally.”

“It is the combination of this growth that has assisted me in reflecting on what is truly important to me. With much sadness but without regret, I realize I am no longer able to adhere to team culture and team environment as it has undermined my ability to perform excellently,” Dotting added.

In the seventh match of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Cup 2022, West Indies ??defeated England in a thrilling contest to register their second consecutive victory in the tournament. After posting 225/6 in their allotted 5??0 overs, the Windies bundled out the English team at 218 to win the game by seven runs.

During England’s chase, the Caribbeans drew the first blood in the most impeccable manner when Deandra Dottin took a stunning catch to send opener Lauren Winfield-Hill (16) back to the pavilion. It all happened on the first ball of the ninth over bowled by Shamilia Connell.

The right-arm pacer delivered a wide outside off delivery, teasing Winfield to go for the full monty. The batter did precisely that and played a uppishly cut towards backward point. However, Dottin had some other plans as she flew to her left and plucked a one-handed stunner to pack Winfield’s innings.

Here is the video:

Connell, who claimed the first wicket, also dismissed Danielle Wyatt (31) and Katherine Brunt (1) to complete her three-wicket haul for 38 runs in her quota of 10 overs, including a maiden. After the middle-order collapse, England’s lower-order did make some valuable contributions but eventually fell seven runs short of the Windies’ score.

Earlier, with the bat, Shemaine Campbelle sizzled by scoring 66 off 80 deliveries to help her side post a decent total on the board. West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor prai??sed the lo??wer order for their contributions. Taylor also appreciated Dottin for the tremendous effort on the field to take the unbelievable catch of Winfield.

“It’s a nice feeling. Nerve-wracking for me, though. When we checked the stats on this ground, we found that we were about 10 under par. We knew we had to bowl well and field well. Really important for the lower order to perform when the top order doesn’t click. We were speechless because she (Dottin) was air-borne (in that catch), but that’s her strength. She moves really fast. We try our best whenever we go out there and don’t try to focus too much on opponents,” said Taylor after the match.
