Former India captain Anil Kumble has issued a clarion call for tough decisions in India’s white-ball setup following the conclusion of the ongoing Champions Trophy 2025.

Anil Kumble calls for tough decisions and transition

Speaking on ESPNcricinfo ‘s Matchday show, Kumble emphasized that this tournament presents a critical juncture for head coach Gautam Gambhir and the entire team, as they must begin transitioning from legacy players to a younger, ??more dynamic squad ahead of the ODI World Cup 2027. According to Kumble, irrespective of how the current tournament unfolds, decisive measures are needed now to map out the future of India’s limited-overs cricket.

He pointed out that the tournament could very well determine which senior players remain in the setup and which new talents need to be integrated. Kumble’s remarks highlight the urgen??cy of preparing a team that is not only competitive in the prese??nt but also built to sustain long-term success in a rapidly evolving cricket landscape, where opportunities in ODIs have dwindled in favor of the T20 format.

“You could say this is a very important tournament for a coach who has to make those tough calls in terms of transitioning from the legacy players to the others. But that’s the job of the coach, to make those hard decisions. This tournament could determine where those seniors would go, and where India would look at making those changes. Win or lose, you need these tough calls to be made at the earliest. You need to start looking ahead in white-ball cricket, especially at the 2027 World Cup,” Kumble said.

Future ODI captain of India after Rohit Sharma

Kumble has been vocal about the need to make hard choices when it comes to captaincy in India’s white-ball cricket, and his current stance is clear: he believed that Jasprit Bumrah is the natural and automatic choice for the ODI captaincy role over Shubman Gill, at least for the time being after Rohit Sharma. While Gill, who currently serves as vice-captain in the ongoing Champions Trophy, has already demonstrated leadership potential – having captained the T20I series in Zimbabwe in 2024 – Bumrah’s performances in Test matches, notably leading in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar series in Australia and in a bilateral series against Ireland in 2023, showcase a temperament and tactical ac??umen that Kumble finds indispensabl?e.

Kumble argued that the scarcity of ODI fixtures since 2023, with most focus on the T20 format where Suryakumar Yadav has been entrusted with captaincy, further underlines the need to preserve Bumrah’s value in limited-overs cricket. By positioning Bumrah as the future leader, the team can start laying down the foundation for a new era in ODI cricket – one that is built on aggressive play, resilience, and strategic planning.

“Shubman is already in the leadership group, and eventually he will get to that captaincy. Now whether it will be immediately after Rohit leaves one-day cricket, or else Bumrah will come in, which is the automatic choice both for Test match cricket and the ODI format, because you hardly play ODIs now,” the former Indian captain added.

“If you look at white-ball cricket, although the next World Cup is 2027, in between 2023 and now, we have hardly played one-day cricket. It’s mostly been T20 format, where Suryakumar Yadav is already the captain. So, when you look at ODI format, to sort of look at Bumrah, and preserve him because he is very valuable, and try to utilize him for important tournaments. So, I think Bumrah will become the natural choice, but Shubman won’t be far behind,” Kumble concluded.

Anil Kumble has stepped forward to clarify his stance after fabricated quotes began circulating on social media targeting Virat Kohli’s batting struggles and Rohit Sharma‘s captaincy during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. These quotes, falsely attributed to Kum?ble, attempted to stir controversy amidst India’s challenging performance in the third Test against Austral?ia.

The incident: Criticism of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

The controversy erupted after social media accounts began sharing quotes under Kumble’s name, criticizing both Kohli and Rohit. One such post, shared by a user named “jod_insane,” claimed Kumble had said:

“I don’t understand why nobody is questioning Virat Kohli. He has been a walking wicket in Tests for the past five years. It’s time for him to pack his bags and settle in London forever. Anil Kumble Not Holding Back,”

This inflammatory quote attempted to pin blame on Kohli for his recent dismissals, particularly hi??s dismissal in the third Test where he fell cheaply after a poor shot selection, leaving India in trouble.

Another post by a user named “iconicc_kohli” claimed in a tweet (now deleted) Kumble criticized Rohit for his lack of tactical planning as captain, especially his failure to counter Australia’s aggressive batter, Travis Head?. The fake post alleged that Kumble said Rohit’s captaincy since his return had been underwhelming and lacked strategic clarity.

Fact check: Anil Kumble’s response on the quotes

Addressing the misinformation, Anil Kumble took to his official ‘X?account (formerly Twitter) to set the record straight. Kumble categorically denied making any such comments regarding Kohli or Rohit, emphasizing that these fabricated stateme??nts were malicious and designed to stir unnecessary controversy during an important series. Kumble, known for his calm and dignified demeanor, firmly stated:

“I have not made any statements regarding the performance of any individual player or the team during the ongoing Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Any quotes attributed to me on social media are completely false. Please do not believe or spread misinformation,”

He also urged fans to rely only on his official channels for accurate update?s and to remain cautious about the growing trend of fake news on social media, particularly during high-profile cricketing events.

“I urge everyone to be vigilant and not believe everything they see on social media. Please verify the authenticity of any information before sharing it. My official social media channels are the only reliable source for my views and statements,” Kohli concluded.

Impact and the intense scrutiny

The fabricated quotes gained significant traction, adding fuel to discussions surrounding India’s struggles in the series. Kohli’s form, especially his inconsistency in Test cricket over the last few years, has been a topic of debate, and the false quotes only intensified the scrutiny. Similarly, Rohit’s captaincy has faced criticism for the lack of effective strategies, particularly in neutralizing key Australian players like Head, who has dominated Indian bowlers. However, Kumble’s intervention brings much-needed clarity, reaffirming that such comments do not reflect his views. His response also highlights the responsibility of fans and media to verify information before engaging with or amplifying such posts.

India trail Australia after rain interruptions on Day 4 at the Gabba

The 3rd Test between Australia and India in Brisbane remains delicately poised as rain interruptions halted India’s innings at 180/6 on Day 4, trailing by 265 runs. After Australia posted a formidable 445 in their first innings, thanks to Head’s aggressive 152 and Steven Smith’s measured 101, India’s response has been challenging.

KL Rahul anchored the innings with a gritty 84, showcasing impeccable judgment outside the off-stump, while Ravindra Jadeja‘s unbeaten 52 steadied India after early collapses. The top-order struggled, with key batters like Kohli (3) and Rohit (10) falling cheaply to Australia’s disciplined pace attack, led by Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc. With India’s lower order yet to bat and persistent rain delays limiting play, the hosts remain in control. Australia’s bowlers will aim to wrap up India’s innings quickly, while the visitors will look for resistance to avoid a follow-on situation.

World Cup winner Gautam Gambhir is reportedly leading the race to become India’s next head coach, succeeding Rahul Dravid after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) opened applications, a month ago in May, for the coveted position, and Gambhir’s name has surfaced prominently in discussions.

Gautam Gambhir’s coaching credentials and leadership

Despite lacking experience as an international coach, Gambhir made significant contributions as a mentor for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), guiding them to victory in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024. Furthermore, his tenure as a mentor for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2022 and 2023, where he steered the team to playoffs was also com?mendable. His leadership prowess is underscored by captaining KKR to IPL titles in 2012 and 2014, cementing his reputation as a season?ed strategist in cricketing circles. His success in the IPL has positioned him as a viable candidate to take charge of the Indian team.

Anil Kumble’s insights on India’s head coach job

Former Indian captain and coach Anil Kumble, Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, has voiced his support for Gambhir, highlighting the potential impact of his appointment on the Indian squad. Kumble emphasized the necessity for a strong leader in the Indian dressing room, a role he believes Gambhir is equipped to fulfill admirably. While acknowledging Gambhir’s achievements with KKR, Kumble stressed the importance of the BCCI granting him sufficient time to transition into the international coaching domain.

“You need somebody with a strong demeanour, and you want continuity. Rahul (Dravid) has done a fantastic job, and hopefully, for him and India’s sake, he has a swansong with the World Cup. What you also have to keep in mind is that some of the senior players are coming towards the backend of their careers. You need players who go through the transition period and ensure India doesn’t miss out the quality in the bowling and batting department. You pick and choose and transition through,” Kumble said.

“You have to give it time. He certainly is capable. We have seen Gautam handle teams. He has been a captain for India, for his franchise, for Delhi. He has all the credentials to be that. But Indian team’s coaching is slightly different, you have to give him time to settle in. Like I mentioned, in case he takes up the job, he will have the task of looking at not just the current lot, but also the future of Indian cricket,” Kumble concluded.

The upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, set to be held in the West Indies and the United States of America (USA), is expected to witness spinners playing a pivotal role throughout the tournament. The venues, especially in the West Indies, are anticipated to offer more assistance to spinners compared to fast bowlers. Recent trends indicate slower pitches, particularly in the West Indies, which could significantly impact the dynamics of the matc??hes.

T20 World Cup 2024 Overview

The T20 World Cup will feature a total of 20 teams competing in 55 matches from June 1 to June 29. The tournament promises intense cricketing action as teams battle it out for the ultimate glory in the shortest format of the game. In preparation for the tournament, various teams, including the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), have announced their respective squads.

Anil Kumble picks India’s primary spinner

India’s 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup includes a formidable spin bowling unit, comprising four spinners. Legendary spinner Anil Kumble, while speaking to Jio Cinema, emphasized the significance of spin in the team’s strategy. He suggested that Kuldeep Yadav should be a guaranteed starter in India’s opening match against Ireland, considering the unpredictable natur??e of the pitches in the USA.

”I don’t know who will be starting in the first game against Ireland. Kuldeep for sure. I don’t know what the pitch conditions are. I don’t think any Indian team has played in the US other than in Fort Lauderdale. So it all depends on the pitch conditions. ‘I guess Kuldeep probably will be the number one spinner in that sense, because he’s your wrist spinner. I’m sure there’ll be one wrist spinner who will play,” Kumble said.

Spinners in India’s squad

Kuldeep, renowned for his wrist spin, is one of the key spinners selected in India’s squad. He is complemented by Yuzvendra Chahal, another wrist spinner, along with all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel. With conditions likely to favour slow bowling, India have strategically ?built a robust spin bowling arsenal to exploit the conditions effectively.

India’s tournament schedule

India are scheduled to depart for New York in separate batches, with the first batch leaving on May 24 and the second batch after May 26, following the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 final. Upon arrival in New York, the team will play a solitary warm-up game before kicking off their official group stage matches from June 5 against Ireland. Subsequently, they will face arch-rivals Pakistan on June 9, followed by encounters against USA and Canada on June 12 and 15, respectively. All of India’s group stage matches, except the final one, will be held in New York, with the last game taking place in Florida.

Anil Kumble’s earnest request

Former RCB captain Anil Kumble, speaking to JioCinema, commended Kohli’s remarkable form, describing his pursuit of excellence as relentless. Kumble expressed hope that Kohli would carry his exceptional form into the upcoming ICC event, emphasizing his pivotal role for Team India.

“Yeah, absolutely. He’s been in outstanding form. He had a bit of a break coming into the IPL, and then he’s just been relentless in his pursuit of excellence. And you could see that. I mean, he’s at the top of the table there with 634 runs, and I’m sure RCB would want him to win the next two games, and hopefully, qualify. But, you know, for India’s sake, you would want this form to continue in the World Cup as well,” Kumble said.

Rohit Sharma, a luminary in the annals of cricket history, particularly within the Indian Premier League (IPL), has steered the Mumbai Indians (MI) to an impressive tally of five IPL titles since the tournament’s inception. Affectionately known as the “Hitman,” this Indian opener stands as one of the most successful players and captains in IPL history, sharing this distinction with the revered former captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), MS Dhoni.

Rohit Sharma: The captaincy maestro of Mumbai Indians

In discussing Rohit’s meteoric ascent, former MI mentor Anil Kumble divulged the rationale behind entrusting him with the captaincy midway through the 2013 season, replacing Australia‘s World Cup-winning captain Ricky Ponting, despite the presence of several other senior player??s in the dressing room.

The year 2013 marked the beginning of Rohit’s tenure as MI captain, a pivotal juncture that witnessed a flurry of trophy-laden triumphs under his stewardship. Serving as a mentor during this transformative period, Kumble, alongside head coach John Wright, witnessed MI clinch both the IPL and Champions Trophy titles in his inaugural year. The culmination of Kumble’s tenure in 2015 saw MI secure yet another IPL trophy, reaffirming Sharma’s prowess as a dynamic leader on the cricketing stage.

Anil Kumble’s insight: The strategic shift in Mumbai Indians’ leadership

In a candid conversation with Ravichandran Ashwin on his talk show “Kutti Stories with Ash,” Kumble unveiled the strategic shift that led? to Rohit assuming the captaincy role.

Kumble explained that the initial p?lan was to appoint Ponting as captain, despite concerns about his performance towards the end of his career, particularly in the T20 format. However, after Mumbai struggled in the first few games and pressure mounted due to the limit on foreign players, Ponting graciously stepped aside. This paved the way for the decision to appoint Rohit as captain.

“So the entire plan was to get Ricky in to becoming the captain. And, there was little bit of concern because he was again at the back end of his career in terms of how well he “go in the T20 format. I mean, great player, legend, but towards the end there’s always, especially if your are going to make him a captain. And once the first few games didn’t go well, Mumbai didn’t win enough games, there was a pressure to change because only four foreigner players you could play. So Ricky was kind enough to sort of step aside and that when we decided that we will go with Rohit (for captaincy),” Kumble said.

The ascension of Rohit: From player to leader

Kumble elaborated, recounting the pivotal moment when he, John, and the team owner deliberated on the need for a player to shoulder responsibility. The impact of their decision reverberated through the team’s performance, evident in Mumbai’s initial struggles.

In Kolkata for a crucial match against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), the decision became imperative. Engaging in dialogue with, both John and Kumble broached the subject of captaincy. Without a moment’s hesitation, Rohit embraced the opportunity, expressing unwavering confidence in his ability to lead. Despite the weight of expectation and the presence of eminent figures in the team, Rohit exhibited resolute resolve, affirming his readiness to lead.

“When I, John Wright, and the owner sat down, we thought the team needed a player who could take responsibility. The impact of the decision was felt on the team’s form, as Mumbai wasn’t winning initial matches. We were in Kolkata for the game against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and we had to make this decision. John Wright and I spoke to Rohit about whether he would like to captain the team. He said, yes, absolutely. Rohit wasn’t nervous and made the decision immediately. There was no hesitation from his side despite all big names being the part of the team,” the 57-year-old concluded.

Virat Kohli, a luminary in Indian cricket, stands as a colossus, earning widespread acclaim for his extraordinary skills, astute leadership, and unyielding determination. Notably, his commitment extends beyond national duties to the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), where Kohli has carved an unparalleled legacy as the sole player to represent the same franchise throughout the illustrious 16-year history of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Insights from legends lounge: T20 dominance and on-field aura

As the cricketing world eagerly anticipates the IPL 2024, slated to commence on March 22, the recent episode of Jio Cinema’s ‘Legends Lounge’ provided a platform for cricketing stalwarts like Anil Kumble, Mike Hesson, Eoin Morgan and Robin Uthappa to reflect on Virat Kohli’s dominance in the T20 format. The experts delved into Kohli’s on-field aura, the evolution of his cricketing prowess, and the defining quality that shaped his legacy.

Anil Kumble identifies the one specific attribute of Virat Kohli

When questioned about the particular characteristic of Kohli that most impresses him and will define his legacy, Kumble succinctly highlighted the term ‘consistency.’ This attribute has been a hallmark of Kohli’s illustrious career, underlining his ability to perform at an elite level across various formats and conditions.

“I would say consistency. I saw him in RCB when I was a part of RCB, that’s where he started his T20 career, after being a U-19 World Cup winner. From there, the transformation in his fitness, the way he wanted to play his cricket, and the performances he’s put in white-ball cricket. In test cricket, we know his greatness. In T20 cricket for India, his consistency over a period of time has been immense. The kind of aggression and attitude he brings on the field is something that helps the team get a kind of intensity,” Kumble said.

Mike Hesson’s glimpse: Kohli beyond the boundary ropes

Hesson, who had the privilege of coaching Kohli during his tenure with RCB, ?provided a glimpse into a calmer and composed Kohli beyond the boundary ropes.

“There are two sides. You talked about the side on the field, but he’s very calm off the field. When youngsters come into the team or overseas players, he’d spend time getting to know them. This was after he was a captain as well. It’s not a captain thing, it’s a genuine want to share and communicate about things other than cricket,” Hesson said.

Anticipation for IPL 2024: Kohli’s grand comeback

During IPL 2023, Kohli’s outstanding performance for RCB saw him amass 639 runs, securing the fourth spot among the season’s highest run-scorers. While Kohli has been absent from competitive cricket since the T20I series against Afghanistan, missing the Test series against England due to personal reasons, he is anticipated to make a comeback in the upcoming IPL 2024, slated to commence later this month. RCB are set to embark on their IPL 2024 journey on March 22 with an away match against the reigning champions, Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Former Indian cricket captain Anil Kumble has sparked intrigue in the cricketing world by identifying a potential successor to the legendary MS Dhoni. In a recent interview, Kumble hinted at a player with remarkable potential, drawing comparisons? to the iconic former c??aptain.

Anil Kumble on India’s next big thing

Kumble reckoned that the young star Dhruv Jurel has the potential to become something like Dhoni. Kumble praised Jurel’s stellar performance in the fourth Test against England in Ranchi, who has catapulted the youngster into the limelight. His gritty 90 in the first innings and an unbeaten 39 in the second innings played a pivotal role in India’s triumphant five-wicket victory at the JSCA International Stadium.

Kumble’s assessment

Kumble, known for his astute cricketing insights, lauded Jurel’s multifaceted skills. He commended the young player’s temperament, technique, and ability to switch between defense and attack seamlessly. Kumble particularly highlighted Jurel’s exceptional glovework, emphasizing his potential for further growth and improvement in the future.

“Oh yes, there’s Rishabh Pant. We don’t know of course when he comes, comes back whenever that happens. Sooner hopefully for Rishabh. But otherwise, yes, he certainly has all the credentials to get to where MS (Dhoni) reached in his career. But he’s shown that he’s not just shown the temperament of his technique to defence but even when he’s attacking. Even in that first innings he was very assured he went after and then hit those big sixes when he was batting with the tail and hats off even behind the stumps,” Kumble said on Jio Cinema.

Kumble on the future prospect of the young star

Notably, Jurel’s inclusion in the playing XI for the fourth Test marked a significant shift, replacing KS Bharat who failed to leave a mark with both bat and gloves. Kumble expressed optimism about Jurel’s future prospects, foreseeing a promising journey ahead for the talented youngster.

“He’s been exceptional. Especially of the faster bowlers. Spinners again took a couple of really good catches and he’s only going to improve. This is only his second Test and I’m sure as he starts playing more and more he’ll only get better. And it only augers well for India. And to have him in a squad is exceptional. Yeah, I mean it’s not been easy for KS Bharat. But that’s why I said the selectors, having seen him with only 15 1st class games have chosen him. Saying okay, this is the person who we believe and introduced him in that last Test. And since then he’s been outstanding and he’s played the match because the batting really I always feel and I don’t want to sort of throw a dampener on this at all because that’s not my intention,” he added.

As the cricketing world eagerly awaits the second Test of the India-England series in Visakhapatnam, the strategic minds of both India and England are working overtime to gain an upper hand in what promises to be a thrilling encounter. After England’s resounding victory in the opening Test, coach Brendon McCullum made he??adlines with his bold statement about?? potentially fielding an all-spin attack against the hosts.

Brendon McCullum’s all-spin attack hint

The revelation that England’s lineup might not feature any pacer in the second Test raised eyebrows, prompting discussions about how India would respond to this spin-centric approach in Visakhapatnam. In the midst of these speculations, India’s legendary spinner and former captain, Anil Kumble, offered a crucial piece of advi?ce to the Indian t?eam.

Anil Kumble’s crucial advice to Team India

In an interview with Jio Cinema, Kumble expressed uncertainty about the idea of including four spinners in the Indian lineup to counter England but recommended considering the inclusion of Kuldeep Yadav. The seasoned leg-spinner emphasized that Kuldeep’s variations could pose significant challenges for the English batters. Kumble’s strategic counsel brought a unique perspective to the table, backed by his immense experience and cricketing acumen.

“I am not really sure whether you need a fourth spinner. But if India feels that they need only one fast bowler then having Kuldeep will certainly help. He will have variations but England will come and do the same things they did in Hyderabad. The wicket could be a turning one and we are expecting the pace to be quicker than this,” said Kumble.
