India’s recent defeat in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy against Australia has raised the curtain on some serious questions with regards to the future of Indian cricket. One such important matter is the future leadership of the team. People within the cricketing community and beyond have raised the issue of looking beyond the leadership of the current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. However, his recent failures against New Zealand and a 1-3 thrashing from the Australia in BGT 2024-??25 has made the questions over hi?s leadership more pertinent than ever.

Sunil Gavaskar opens up on who should be the next captain of the Indian team

Former Indian skipper and legend Sunil Gavaskar had some interesting thoughts on the leadership role within the Indian team. Gavaskar, who was in Australia covering the 5-match Test series as a broadcaster recently highlighted the Indian player who according t?o him carries the personality of a leader and therefore is suitable to be the next captain of the Indian cricket team.

“With Bumrah, you can see that he expects the others to do what their job is and why they’re in the national team. But he doesn’t seem to pressurize anybody. And with the fast bowlers, he has been absolutely brilliant. Standing at mid-off, mid-on. Every time he was on hand to tell them and guide them. I think he was absolutely brilliant and I won’t be surprised if he takes over very soon,?/em> Gavaskar said on Channel7 speaking about Jasprit Bumrah.

Additionally, Gavaskar poi??nted out the reason why he thinks Bumrah is the perfect person to lead the Indian team and the qualities he carries as a person which are crucial in a player to become the captain of t??he team.

“He could be the next man. I think he will be the next man. Because he leads from the front. He has got a very good air about him. The air of a leader. But not somebody who is going to put pressure on you. Sometimes you have captains who put a lot of pressure on you,” Gavaskar concluded.

Indian star’s track record as the captain

The 31-year old Indian pacer led the Indian team recently during the first Test match of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at Perth. The Indian team performed exceptionally well in the Test match and won convincingly against the Aussies by 295 runs. Bumrah was called to become the captain of the team for the second time during the final Test match after skipper Rohit opted to keep himself out of the match in Sydney. Bumrah continued his exceptional performance in Sydney and clinched 2 crucial wickets in the first Australian innings. Howe??ver, the Indian pacer could not continue bowling for his team on the third day of the match due to a back spasm. This proved d?etrimental to the visitors as Australia managed to achieve the target of 162 runs for the loss of just 4 wickets to win the series.

Michael Vaughan remains one of the most celebrated captains in England’s cricket history, remembered for leading the national team to a historic Ashes triumph in 2005, their first in 18 years. Under his leadership, England flourished, with Vaughan captaining the side? in 51 Test matches and 60 ODIs during a distinguished?? career that spanned nearly a decade. His tenure set a benchmark for tactical acumen and resilience, inspiring a generation of English cricketers.

Now, it seems Vaughan’s legacy of leadership has found its way to the next generation, as his son, Archie Vaughan, has been appointed captain of the England Under-19 squad for their upcoming tour of South Africa. The young Vaughan’s appointment highlights not just his potential as a player but ?also his ability to lead, much like hi?s father.

Archie Vaughan to lead the youth England team

The 19-year-old h??as been selected as the skipper of the under-19 national side as they head to South Africa to play 3 ODIs and 2 Test matches against the junior Proteas team. The junior English team’s tour to South Africa will begin on January 17 as they will play their first ODI against South Africa’s under-19 side in Cape Town. As Archie is appointed the captain of England’s under-19 side, cricket enthusiasts eagerly await to see if he can emulate his father’s ?leadership success. While expressing his happiness over the news, he highlighted the importance being the skipper of the national side carries for him.

“To get the?? opportu??nity to represent England at this level is really special in itself, but to lead the team out is something else. If someone had told me 12 months ago that I would have forced my way into the Somerset first team and be captaining the Under-19s, I wouldn’t have believed them. It happened quickly but I’m going to keep my feet on the ground and work harder and harder,?/em> junior Vaughan said during a recent discussion.

Archie’s cricket journey so far

Archie has recently moved his way up to Somerset‘s senior squad and played 4 first class matches. He has impressed during the short span of first-class cricket scoring 236 runs and taking 15 wickets with two 5-wicket hauls against Surrey. The pre-quarter final stage of the Vijay Hazare Trophy commenced with two stellar fixtures today. While Haryana faced a determined Bengal side in the 1st preliminary quarter-final, Rajasthan were up against Tamil Nadu in the second match. Amidst raining runs in both the matches, a standout performance came from the spin sensation Varun Chakaravarthy who has impressed once again as he clinched 5 wickets for his domestic side, Tamil Nadu and saved?? the day for the team’s bowling unit.

Varun Chakaravarthy keeps Tamil Nadu’s hopes alive

Varun had a remarkable domestic season with the ball so far. The 33-year-old has bagged 13 wickets for his side till now. Adding another feather in his cap is a 5-wicket haul in the domestic season which makes him a standout performer for his squad in the pre-??quarter final fixture.

Notably, Rajasthan skipper Mahipal Lomror and star batter Deepak Hooda were the first ones who could not bear the remarkable bowling spell from Varun and were bowled out scoring 60 and 7 runs respectively. Varun then dismissed a dangerous looking Abhijeet Tomar who had scored an emphatic century to give a solid start to Rajasthan. However, a loose shot from the ??opening batter proved detrimental to his innings.

Kukna Ajay Singh was next in-line who gave a simple catch to Indrajith in the slips and returned back to the pavilion scoring just 2 runs for his side. Tailender Khaleel Ahmed was the final dismissal of the off-spin maestro for the day. This was his first 5-wicket haul in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. A stunning performance from Varun stopped the run flow for Rajasthan as they were bowled out by Tamil Nadu in 47.3 overs with a 267 runs on the board. The leg-spinner has featured in 13 T20I matches for India and has taken 19 wickets for the national side.

Varun aims for a place in the Champions Trophy 2025

Vijay Hazare Trophy can just be the right platform for Varun to impress the selectors and get an opportunity to debut for India in the ODI format and be a part of the Indian in the upcoming Champions Trophy 2025. India is set to play all its matches in the UAE and a lethal spin option can prove beneficial for the team considering the fact that historically, pitch in Dubai ha?s been favourable for spin bowling.

Additionally, Varun will also look forward to proving his abilities in the upcoming T20I and ODI series against England on home soil. With Kuldeep Yadav injured, India is looking for a stable spin alternative in white-ball cricket. Varun has played 22 List-A matches in his career so far and also a constant starter for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Cricket is often celebrated as a contest between bat and ball, but occasionally, it evolves into a battle between players themselves. Such was the case during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25, where young Australian opener Sam Konstas found himself in the thick of the action. Konstas became a central talking point after making his Test debut for Australia during the iconic Boxing Day Test in Melbourne. His performances, coupled with fiery exchanges with several Indian players, fueled intense debate within the cricketing community. Amid the ongoing buzz, former England pacer Steve Harmison shared his doubts about the long-term ?prospects of the youngster in the longest format of the game.

Steve Harmison shares his take over Sam Konstas?potential to play Test cricket

The 19-year-old Australian opener got involved in a heated exchange with former Indian skipper Virat Kohli in Melbourne after a shoulder clash forced the two players to throw heated remarks at each other. Later on, Konstas became a major talking point in the series once again when he got involved in a tussle with Jasprit Bumrah in the dying moments of Day 4 ?of the final Test in Sydney.

These clashes with the Indian players has forced the English legend Harmison to share his remarks over Kon??stas?future. Analysing his character and the recent Test performances, Harmison opined that Konstas?ability to play Test cricket at the highest level is limited and playing him can prove to be a double-faced sword for the Australian team.

“Part of me thinks Sam Konstas won’t play even 10 Test matches. Part of me thinks this kid can be an absolute superstar if he delivers. He’s got the chat, he’s got the ramps, he’s got the scoops, he’s got the big shots, but has he got a defensive technique to open the batting in Test match cricket against the world’s best?,?/em> Harmison remarked during a discussion on talkSPORT cricket.

Additionally, Harmison pointed out at the technical abilities of the 19-year-old Konstas and questioned whether intensity and character are enough for him to play against able opposition sides for a long period of time. Australia have a long season of Test cricket ahead as they head to Sri Lanka to play a 2-match Test series after which they will defend the coveted Test mace against South Africa in the WTC finals at the Lord’s. The T?est cricket actio?n for the Aussies will continue at the end of the year as they will face England to defend The Ashes on their home soil.

“I look at him and think he just wants to be David Warner and technically he’s nowhere near as good as David and that for me, if he is opening the batting against England, I’d be happy. I really would. I know we are a really long way away from The Ashes,” Harmsion concluded.

Konstas’ rollercoaster Test cricket journey so far

Konstas had shown promising signs in the Australian first class cricket which earned him a rare opportunity to feature in the Prime Minister’s XI squad i??n a warm-up match against India before the Border-Gavaskar? Trophy 2024-25. Konstas played an empathic 107-run knock in the match against Indians and set the tone of his Test debut in the near future.

The Australian team called him to the squad after the 3rd Test in Brisbane. Opening batter Nathan McSweeney was having a difficult time with the bat in the series and the Australian team management decided to give Konstas a chance to have a dream debut in the Boxi??ng Day Test match in Melbourne. The youngster did not disappoint and started his Test career in a sensational manner. Konstas played a storming 60-run knock off 65 balls and announced his arrival in a remarkable fashion.

Pakistan had a disappointing journey in the 2023-25 WTC cycle so far. The team has recently faced a series white-wash against South Africa and currently sit 8th in the WTC table, even behind the likes of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The Pakistani team ?will hope for some redemption as they are set to the West Indies at home for their last series of the current cycle.

Pakistan’s horror-show in the current WTC cycle

Pakistan’s journey in the ongoing World Test Championship (WTC) cycle has been far from impressive, with inconsistent performances both at home and abroad. The team has managed to secure only four victories, two of which came against England on home soil and the other two against Sri Lanka. Their overseas record paints an even bleaker picture, with just a solitary series win against Sri Lanka, highlighting their struggles in fo??reign conditions.

Against stronger opposition like Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand, Pakistan have often faltered, unable to mount a significant challenge. Among the SENA nations, Pakistan’s sole victory came against England in a home series last October. These results underline the team’s inability to consistently perform against top-tier teams, raising concerns about their competitiveness in the WTC. To regain their footing, Pakistan will need to address these shortcomings and deliver more i?mpac??tful performances in future cycles.

Amidst a consistent failure of the Pakistani team to leave their mark i?n the longest format of the game, here are 5 players with most wickets for Pakistan in the current WTC cycle.

The left-arm slow bowler may have started his career for the national team a bit late but his determination and wicket-taking ability for the team has earned him the fame he deserves. The 38-year-old is the leading wicket-taker for Pakistan?? in the current WTC cycle with 30 wickets to his name. He took 20 wickets in 2024 with a notable performance in the home series against England where he was a constant trouble for the English batters. The Pakistani spinner will aim to make a comeback in the squad against West Indies in the home series after his exclusion from the squad for the tour to South Africa.

  • Sajid Khan: The stand-out character for Pakistan
Sajid Khan

Sajid is known to give his all for the team whenever the national side avails his services. In 2024, Sajid was called in the squad against England and he proved once again why he is one of the most intense players Pakistan has in Test cricket. The 31-year-old is not just limited to theatrics but also has a remarkable track record. He took 22 wickets for Pakistan last year making him the second highest wicket-taker for his national side. A highlight of his journey i?n Test cricket for the Pakistani team is the impeccable performance he gave in Multan as he clinched 7/111 for his team in 26.2 overs that he bowled.

  • Aamer Jamal: Pakistan’s dependable all-rounder
Aamer Jamal

Jamal may have a silent series with the bat and bowl against South Africa, but the capabilities of the all-rounder is well known in?? the cricketing community. The 28-year-old has managed to take 12 wickets in 2023 with a marquee 6-wicket haul for the national side against Australia in Perth. The Pakistani pacer has now become a regular starter in the Pakistan’s Test side. The number could have been more for Shahzad had a rib injury not affected h??is prospects in the Test team.

M??any regard Naseem to be the emerging leader of the Pakistani pace attack. The youngster has already taken 60 wickets in the longest format of the game. However, his recent release from the Test team after Pakistan lost the first Test match against England at home did halt his advance in red-ball cricket. The 21-year old made a comeback in the Test side for the tour to South Africa and despite the team’s underwhelming performance took 4 wickets for his national team in the Centurion Test.

Melbourne Cricket Ground Pitch Report:

The pitch at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) generally offers a balanced contest between bat and ball in T20 format. The surface typically provides good bounce and ?carry, benefiting fast bowlers, especially in the early overs. The large outfield makes running between the wickets crucial, as boundaries can be harder to come by. Seamers often exploit swing with the new ball, particularly under lights. Teams winning the toss generally prefer to bowl and take advantage of favourable conditions for pacers in the initial phases of the game.

The Test cricket action for the season is nearing its end with Australia sealing a 3-1 win over India to win the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 and South Africa’s series white-wash against Pakistan. As the current WTC cycle is coming to a close, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has updated ??its standings with significant changes in the individual ranki??ngs of the players.

Jasprit Bumrah crowned top Test bowler

Jasprit Bumrah had a stellar tour to Australia. The 31-year-old?? led the Indian team in the first Test match at Perth and last Test at Sydney. The Indian pace sensation was the leading wicket-taker of the series as he took 32 wickets in the 5-match Test series. Bumrah was also name??d the Player of the Series for his exemplary bowling display throughout BGT 2024-25.

With a career best rating of 908 which he achieved in Sydney against Australia, Bumrah has consolidated his spot as the No.1 Test bowler in the world in the updated ICC rankings. The Australian skipper Pat Cummins has moved one rank upwards with a rating of 841. South Africa pacer Kagiso Rabada has clinched the thi?rd spot after having a remarkable 2-m??atch Test series against Pakistan.

Other notable bowlers who have moved upwards in Test rankings is Scott Boland who has moved 29 places up with a career best rating of 745 to clinch the 9th spot alongside Ravindra Jadeja. South African spinner Keshav Maharaj has also climbed the ladder and clinched the 17th spot overtaking New Zealand pacer Kyle Jamieson.

Kohli slips further in Test Rankings

Indian batters had a dreadful Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Apart from Yashasvi Jaiswal, no Indian batter has performed consistently for the team. An average display from Indian batters is reflected in their updated ICC rankings. The most notable decline in the rankings is that of Virat Kohli. The middle-order batter was placed at 25th spot in the ICC Test rankings before the series. However, with a grim performance with the bat in ??Australia, his ranking has further dropped down to 27th spot with a meagre rating of 614. The sharp decline in Kohli’s batting abilities can be seen from the fact that the 36-year-old achieved his career best rating of 937 back in 2018.

The situation of other batters is also concerning in the Test rankings. Top-order batter Shubman Gill has dropped down to 23rd place with a rating of 631. The second ODI between New Zealand and Sri Lanka was played at Seddon Park in Hamilton in which the Blackcaps managed to outperform the visitors and win the match by 113 runs.

A batting master-class from Blackcaps

The rain caused a two and a half hour delay in the match and a reduction in overs. Each side was given 37 overs to bat. Sri Lanka won the toss and invited the home side to bat first in a pitch affected due to damp conditions and a slow outfield. However, New Zealand got off to a flying start with a solid 1st wicket partnership between opener Rachin Ravindra and Mark Chapman. The two batters added 112 runs in the New Zealand total after opener Will Young’s early departure.

Eyeing a mammoth total against Sri Lanka, wickets kept falling continuously after Ravindra’s departure whose stellar 79-run knock proved out to be the difference maker later on in the game. A major turbulence in the Blackcaps innings occurred as the lower order crashed completely due to a remarkable hattrick from spinner Maheesh Theekshana who got rid of a dangerous looking New Zealand skipper Mitchell Santner and tailenders Nathan Smith and Matt Henry. Thus the New Zealand?? total got restricted to 255/9 at the end of its 37 overs.

Sri Lankan batting horror-show continues

The batting woes of the visitors continued in the game. Double digits score became a rare sight in the Sri Lankan batting line-up in this match with the entire Sri Lankan top-order putting up a flop show. Kamindu Mendis was the only batter who could withstand the intensity from New Zealand pacers and made 64 runs off 66 balls. However, the Sri Lanka run-chase sank after his dismissal. Janith Liyange and Chamindu Wickramasinghe tried to support Mendis but failed to face the persistent offensive bowling from the Kiwis. As a result, the Sri Lankan innings got wrapped up within 30.2 overs and were bowled out for 142 runs. New Zealand now have an invincible 2-0 lead over the visitors in the 3-match ODI series. Both sides will now face each other for the final match of the series at Eden Park in Auckland.
