In the aftermath of India’s triumphant victory in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, captain Rohit Sharma has addressed speculation about his future in cricket, particularly regarding his participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup. India’s Champions Trophy victory and speculation regarding Rohit Sharma’s retirement

India’s victory in the Champions Trophy marked their third title in the tournament, with Rohit playing a pivotal role in the final, scoring 76 runs off 83 deliveries to help India chase down New Zealand’s total of 251-7. This win came amidst speculation of Rohit’s potential retirement from ODI cricket, which he swiftly dismissed during the post-match press conference. Rohit emphasized that he has no plans to retire from the ODI format, stating, “I am not going to retire from this format just to ensure no rumours circulate moving forward.”

Rohit’s reaction on his possible participation in the 2027 ODI World Cup

Despite his commitment to continuing in ODI cricket, Rohit expressed uncertainty about participating in the 2027 World Cup. At 37 years old, Rohit is aware❀ of the challenges that come with age, particularly in a sport where physical fitness and form are crucial. By the time the 2027 World Cup takes place, Rohit will be 40, an age at which many cricketers have retired or significantly reduced their involvement in international cricket.

Rohit’s hesitation stems from his desire to maintain a high level of performance. He has consistently emphasized the importance of enjoying the game while contributing positively to the team.

“Right now, I’m playing really, really well, and I’m enjoying everything I’m doing with this team, and the team is enjoying my company as well, which is nice,” the Indian skipper was quoted as saying to ICC Insider Sangana Ganesan.

“I can’t really say 2027, because it’s too far, but I’m keeping all my options open.”

Having led the Men in Blue to victory in the Champions Trophy 2025 final – and being named Player of the Match, Rohit also explained what makes the current India squad so special that he remains eager to be a part of it.

“As long as I’m enjoying the sport, I’m enjoying playing the game, doing what I’m doing for this team, I will continue to play,” he said.

“It is something that really makes me happy. There are a lot of things involved, there’s so much pride, and the way this team is playing, I don’t want to leave this team.

“The way we are playing at this point in time, there is so much joy, so much fun to play with all of them.”
