Former Indian cricketer Parthiv Patel recently shared his insights on the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) team during his stint with them, highlighting the team’s focus on individual players rather than a cohesive unit. Patel commented on the podcast “Cyrus Says,” where he discussed the team’s dynamics and the reasons behind their Indian Premier League (IPL) title drought.
Individualism at RCB
During his time with RCB, Patel observed that the team’s focus was primarily on the performances of individual players rather than the team as a whole. He noted that the team was “always about individuals” and that the legendary trio of Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Chris Gayle dominated the team’s attention. This individualistic approach, according to Patel, contributed significantly to the team’s struggles in winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) title.
“I played for RCB, I’ve have been there for four years. The team is always about individuals it’s not about the team. And then everyone will come out of that team will say that,” the 39-year-old said on Cyrus Says podcast.
Impact on team dynamics
Patel’s comments suggest that the team’s emphasis on individual players created a culture where the collective effort was often overlooked. He believes this hindered the team’s ability to function as a cohesive unit, leading to a lack of synergy and, ultimately, poor performance. The team’s reliance on a few star players meant that the rest of the squad often felt marginalized, which affected their morale and motivation.
“Because it’s all about Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Chris Gayle when I was in the team. So they were given the kind of special preference always so there the team culture was not there you can see clearly when they are playing, and that is the reason why they haven’t won the trophies. That’s the fact,” Patel added.

IPL title drought
The RCB team has struggled to win the IPL title despite having some of the best players in the world. Patel attributes this to the team’s inability to gel together as a unit. He believes that the team’s focus on individual performances rather than collective effort has been a major factor in their IPL title drought. The veteran’s insights highlight the importance of team dynamics and the need for a balanced approach to ensure success in team sports.
Criticism of RCB’s culture
Patel’s comments also critiqued the team’s culture during his time with RCB. He believes that the team’s focus on individual players created an environment where the team’s overall performance suffered. Patel’s criticism is not limited to the team’s performance but also extends to the culture within the team, which he believes was not conducive to success.
