Despite widespread speculation that IPL 2023 would mark Dhoni’s final appearance in the tournament, he was retained as the captain for CSK in the upcoming IPL 2024. CSK, after releasing eight players, effectively retained the core of their team, including Dhoni, Ravindra Jadeja and Ruturaj Gaikwad.

De Villiers expressed his delight at seeing Dhoni’s name in the CSK retention list. Acknowledging the earlier speculation about Dhoni’s potential exit, the 39-year-old emphasized the unpredictability of the legendary captain’s decisions. “I see that man’s name on the retention list, and it just makes me happy. There was a lot of talk about it in the last season about whether it was going to be his last season. He is moving on to 2024 to play another IPL season. With him, he is always full of surprises. Maybe he has got three more to go, who knows? But It is just great to see his name on there,” De Villiers said on his Youtube channel.
