In a thrilling and closely contested clash at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, South Africa emerged victorious over Pakistan in Match 26 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.

The hard-fought encounter marked the fourth consecutive loss for the Babar Azam-led side, furthe♔r intensifying their struggle in the tournament. With only two wins in six matches, Pakistan now find themselves teetering on the brink of elimination from the cricketing extravaganza.

Game-changing DRS verdict

During a pivotal moment in the game, the last ball of the 46th over held a peculiar twist as South Africa needed eight runs for victory. Haris Rauf‘s delivery landed on a perfect length and made contact with the Proteas batter Tabraiz Shamsi‘s front foot. Pakistan fielders immediately shouted for a huge LBW appeal, but the umpire was not convinced.

As the on-field umpire called it n൲ot out, Pakistan opted for Decision Review System (DRS) referral. The ball tracking was promptly implemented, unveiling that the impact was in line with the stumps, even though the ball had initially pitched outside off and just grazed the leg stump.

Despite the close call, the on-field umpire’s decision was upheld, granting the batter a lifeline which ultimately led the Temba Bavuma-led side to secure their 🉐fifth win in the tournament. The intense moment added a layer of drama to an already gripping match.

Babar Azam’s to-the-point take on the decision

After the match, Babar humbly accepted the crucial role of the DRS, considering it an inherent aspect of the game. He recognized that if the on-field umpire had ruled out, it would have worked in Pakistan’s favour. Additionally, the 29-year-old acknowledged the “Umpire’s Call” element in DRS and the need to respect and accept those decisions.

“To be honest, it’s part of the game. If the umpire had given OUT, it would have favored us. It’s Umpire’s Call on the drs and we have to take it,” Babar said during the post-match presentation.
