The ODI World Cup 2023 has been a rollercoaster ride of thrilling matches and unexpected outcomes, keeping cricket enthusiasts worldwide on the edge of their seats. A similar clash yet again went underway on a fateful Saturday at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai, where England took the field to lock horns with South Africa in a much-anticipated showdown.
It is worth mentioning that both teams had recently suffered surprising defeats against Afghanistan and Netherlands, and fans were eager to see how they would fare against each other. However, disappointment loomed when it was revealed during the toss that South Africa’s regular captain, Temba Bavuma, was not in the starting lineup.
The shocking news of Temba Bavuma’s exclusion
As the match kicked off, it was Aiden Markram who emerged for the toss, raising eyebrows and sparking curiosity about Bavuma’s absence. Markram not only lost the toss but also delivered the unexpected news about Bavuma’s exclusion from the playing XI.

Speaking about Bavuma’s exclusion during the toss, Markram explained that Bavuma was unwell, and in his place, Reeza Hendricks would take the field.
“Bavuma is ill, so Reeza comes in. Nice opportunity for him. There might be a little bit in it (the pitch) during the powerplay. It sort of motivates you a bit, but we’re not focusing too much on it. It’s about reaching the standards set by us. Reeza has been knocking on the door for a while, and he comes in. It’s a fantastic opportunity for him,” said Markram.
