Team India have been penalised for maintaining a slow over-rate in the recently-concluded fifth ꦗand final Test against England at the Edgbaston in Birmingham.

The Jasprit Bumrah-led side was found guilty of two overs short of the target after reasonable adjustments and time allowances had been taken into consideration by the on-field umpires Aleem Dar and Richard Kettleborough and third umpire Marais Erasmus.

Therefore, the visitors have been docked two World Test Championship (WTC) points and were fined 40 per cent of their match fee. Captain Jasprit Bumrah pleaded guilty to the offence, with match referee David Boon imposing the sanction without needing a form🐠al hearing.

Notably, this is the second occasion India have been penalised for the slow-overrate offence in the England series and third overall in the ongoing WTC 2021-23 cycle. They lost two points in the series opener in Nottingham and another point in Centurion on their tour of South Africa in January earlier this year. As a result of the penalty, India currently have 52.08 percentage points, a bit lower than Pakistan’s 52.38, and are placed No. 4 on the WTC table, below Australia, South Africa and Pakistan.

Speaking about the match, India faced a seven-wicket defeat after England overhauled the 378-run target successfully. With the victory, the hosts also managed to level the five-match series 2-2. Former skipper Joe Root and explosive batter Jonny Bairstow both smashed unbeaten centuries in the♏ second innin🐈gs to ensure England recorded their highest successful chase in Test cricket.
