New ICC rules for slow over-rate to help team Captains

On Thursday, the International Cricket Council has approved a new set of rules regarding slow over-rates, that goes in affect starting 1st August 2019. As per the new rules, the team’s skipper will no longer be at risk of suspension. Instead, the council has decided to deduct points and fine the whole team for such occurrences.

Earlier, if a team had two slow over-rate violations within one year, it resulted in the team’s captain to be suspended for one match.

In the statement released, ICC said, “Captains will no longer be suspended for repeated or serious over-rate breaches. All players should be held equally responsible for slow over rates, and as such will be fined at the same level as the captain“.

For each delayed over, ICC plans to deduct two competition points. “In World Test Championship matches a team that is behind the required over-rate at the end of a match will have two competition points deducted for each over it is behind“, ICC added.

The World Test championship will occur from 2019 to 2021 and the first tournament will be in the form of the Ashes, scheduled from 1st August.

Both England and Australia have yet to announce thei♈r squad for the upcoming challenge.
