England’s speedster James Anderson recently revealed that Ben Stokes had requested the umpire to take off 4 overthrows from their score. The English team was awarded 6 runs at the crucial stage of the game when Guptill’s throw hit Stokes’ bat and went to the boundary.
Australian umpire Simon Taufel considers this an umpiring error and claims that England should haꦫve been awarded ꦚ5 runs instead of 6.
Anderson featured in a BBC’s Tailenders podcast after England first World Cup win.
“The etiquette in cricket is if the ball is thrown at the stumps and it hits you and goes into a gap in the field you don’t run. But if it goes to the boundary, in the rules it’s four and you can’t do anything about it.“, said Anderson.
“I think, talking to Michael Vaughan who saw him after the game, Ben Stokes actually went to the umpires and said, ‘Can you take that four runs off. We don’t want it‘”, Anderson added.
“But it’s in the rules and that’s the way it is“, told the pacer.
There are reports that Ben Stokes is likely to be knighted for his h♎eroics in the World Cup final.
